struggles, development, mostly just battle scenes.
Reviewed: 09-21-23
events just run from one battle to another without justification (like mc "no one tells me what to do", so he just starts killing). The battles seem well described, but thats the gist of the story action. Characters come and go without background world development. too many character names sound the same to me so had hard time distinguishing. maybe story would be filled out in next book? However I don't recognize any hints or hope for explanations to come. the story idea seems novel though, but not well developed imo. performance is good, but cant really save the missing story elements.

repetitive talking heads, didn't finish

I finally gave up halfway thru. seemed to me mostly characters talking and having similar conversations repeatedly. maybe it gets more interesting later, but I just didn't recognize a worthwhile plot. performance is good tho.

Story
A long time ago in the future, the secret of time travel became known to all. Unsurprisingly, the world nearly ended. There will always be idiots who want to change history. Enter the Time Police. An all-powerful, international organisation tasked with keeping the timeline straight. At all costs. Their success is legendary. The Time Wars are over. But now they must fight to save a very different future - their own. This is the story of Jane, Luke and Matthew - the worst recruits in Time Police history. Or, very possibly, three young people who might change everything.

inconsistent and frustrating character development
Reviewed: 08-05-20
Didn't finish. the narrator is great,, but grew tired of the continual angst and inconsistent characters in the story. spend too much time on their insecurities or being jerks. then suddenly acting different with any clue why they change. And the characters competencies to fit their responsibility. nothing remotely plausable. I didn't discover a plot line before giving up.

Lots of battles, plot missing?
Reviewed: 05-06-18
the reader was great, and lots of great battle descriptions, but plot very weak. Starting action well done, but rest of story disjoint. Characters and events seem similar enough in character I found difficuly to tell apart. What little plot there was did seem to make sense.

from reviews a lot of people really like this book. i managed a few chapters before i tired of enduring the seemly gratuitous trash talk. it might get better later, and perhaps i would have been better to get a readable copy to quickly skip the junk. just not for me. gave 2 stars to give the latter of story the benifit of the doubt.

Talking heads, hard to follow
Reviewed: 08-23-14
Would you try another book from John Ringo and/or Marc Vietor?
Maybe, I liked the looking glass series, but not this one. I thought Vietor was good though
Has A Hymn Before Battle turned you off from other books in this genre?
A bit - this was mostly just talking heads, all seeming to insult or backbite one another. Overdone with the profanity. Hardly anything seemed to happen, just talk, talk, talk.
I'm unlikely to try another John Ringo without better info. The reviews just led me astray.
I never finished the audio, probably half way through before quitting.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Marc Vietor?
Sure
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from A Hymn Before Battle?
Don't know - seemed unredeemable.
