Story
For 150 years, high above rocky Scottish cliffs, Caldonbrae Hall has sat untouched, a beacon of excellence in an old ancestral castle. A boarding school for girls, it promises that the young women lucky enough to be admitted will emerge “resilient and ready to serve society.” Into its illustrious midst steps Rose Christie: a 26-year-old Classics teacher, Caldonbrae’s new head of the department, and the first hire for the school in over a decade.

Narration is wonderful. Story? not so much
Reviewed: 06-27-21
I'm very picky about narrators and I really liked this narrator so thought I would give the book a chance. The writing and plot are very formulaic. The author does do a good job of setting an atmosphere, but the plot was not that interesting or surprising in any way. I hope the narrator reads more books that are of a higher literary quality.

Do you hate the term “middle age?” So does Kristin van Ogtrop, who is still trying to come up with a less annoying way to describe those years when you find yourself both satisfied and outraged, confident and confused, full of appreciation but occasional disdain for the world around you.

Relatable but also very insightful thoughts on ageing, family, and life. The performance was wonderful (which sometimes is not the case when it's the author reading). Very much worth your time.

Story
Janet works at a rundown dog shelter in the woods. She wears black, loves The Smiths, and can’t wait to get rid of her passive-aggressive boyfriend. Her brain is full of anxiety, like “one of those closets you never want to open because everything will fall out and crush you.” She has a meddlesome family, eccentric coworkers, one old friend who’s left her for Ibiza, and one new friend who’s really just a neighbor she sees in the hallway.

Very funny

This is a somewhat dark, but very funny book. I would love to be friends with the main character, except she probably doesn't want any friends. The narrator for the audiobook was perfect for this book. How I wish there was a real "Christmas pill." I hesitated buying this book when I read that she works at a shelter for dogs since I can't stand reading (or especially listening) to detailed accounts about animal cruelty, but rest assured, there is nothing like that in this book.

Story
From the frenzy of the 2012 Olympics to the aftermath of the Brexit referendum, here Jonathan Coe chronicles the story of modern Britain by way of a cast of characters whose world is being upended. There are newlyweds who disagree about the country’s future and, possibly, their relationship; a political commentator who writes impassioned columns about austerity from his lavish town house while his radical teenage daughter undertakes a relentless quest for universal justice; and Benjamin Trotter, who embarks on an apparently doomed new career in middle age, and his father.

Great novel and great narrator
Reviewed: 10-19-19
I always agonize over whether to buy a book in Kindle format or buy the Audible version. Rory Kinnear is an excellent narrator and perfect for this book, so I would highly recommend the Audible version. I have enjoyed Jonathan Coe's novels very much. You will probably enjoy this even more if you read the previous novels, "Rotters Club" and "The Closed Circle."

Story
Jackson Brodie has relocated to a quiet seaside village, in the occasional company of his recalcitrant teenage son and an aging Labrador, both at the discretion of his ex-partner Julia. It's picturesque, but there's something darker lurking behind the scenes. Jackson's current job, gathering proof of an unfaithful husband for his suspicious wife, is fairly standard-issue, but a chance encounter with a desperate man on a crumbling cliff leads him into a sinister network—and back across the path of his old friend Reggie.

Perfect match of book and narrator

It's absolute magic when a great book also has a great narrator in the form of an audiobook. Mr. Isaacs is the perfect narrator for this book, and I enjoyed it immensely.

Story
You’ve heard of an Essex Girl or even a Chelsea Girl, but what about a Hounslow Girl? Definition of a Hounslow Girl: a young Muslim woman who wears hooped earrings with her headscarf and grapples with traditional values while hustling her way through urban London. The Diary of a Hounslow Girl is a bold and provocative one-person play, written and performed by Ambreen Razia. From the joys of traditional Pakistani weddings to fights on the night bus, this is a comic story of dreams, aspirations and coming of age, told through the eyes of a 16-year-old British Muslim girl.

The story and performance are interesting and compelling. I could really do without the sound effects, however. I don't mind the doors slamming, etc. but parts of it had very annoying background sound that I guess was supposed to evoke emotional heightening, but instead it was just annoying and made it hard to hear the story. I think most listeners have good enough imaginations that we don't need extra sound effect or a soundtrack-like background.
