Narration flaw
Reviewed: 07-16-21
I have listened to all of Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder books and have enjoyed them. The narrator is very good, with one big exception! As a fluent German speaker, I found the excerpts of German, Or Pennsylvania Dutch, almost intolerable. Ms. McInerney would be well advised to learn and practice German pronounciation.

Story
With the holidays approaching, amateur sleuth Geneva Pomolo takes a minor role in a community theatre’s musical stage adaptation of A Christmas Carol. A lifelong Dickens fan, Geneva is hoping for a calm respite from the rigors of crime-solving, but her stage debut proves anything but calming. The cast is stacked with powerful egos who have deluded themselves into thinking they deserve a career in Hollywood — such as Peter Vankirk, who lands the starring role of Ebenezer Scrooge.

First time with this author/narrator

This story was just so-so. It could have used some more depth and nuance in the plot, which would have had the added benefit of making it a little longer. That said, I really enjoyed the narration. It helped enough that I was able to enjoy this book despite above stated flaws, hence my five star review.

Story
In Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned - from the layout of the winding roads to the colors of the houses to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules. Enter Mia Warren - an enigmatic artist and single mother - who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenage daughter, Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I found the writing mediocre. I was able to listen to the entire book, but just barely. The end was particularly poor. I do not recommend.
