Story
Annalise Finch is content - she has a job she enjoys, lives close to her family and friends, and spends most Wednesday nights drinking wine with her grandma. According to her grandma, though, she has lost her sparkle, and the only solution is to join a site to hook up with other women. The only problem (aside from a meddling grandma with a dirty mind) is Annalise doesn’t like women. At least, that’s what she always thought, but when she meets Brinley Adams, she starts to question everything.

creaky voice narrator, decent story
Reviewed: 11-18-24
Probably a more amusing story for younger lesbians, tbh. Had enough amusing moments to generally get me through the cringey ones, but *oof* had to take so many listening breaks if only the narrator weren't so permanently in creaky voice mode ?!

Story
In this sweeping history of the ancient Near East, Amanda Podany takes listeners on a gripping journey from the creation of the world's first cities to the conquests of Alexander the Great. The book is built around the life stories of many ancient men and women, from kings, priestesses, and merchants to brickmakers, musicians, and weavers. Their habits of daily life, beliefs, triumphs, and crises, and the changes that people faced over time are explored through their own written words and the buildings, cities, and empires in which they lived.

Well researched, engaging, & well paced, details of so many ancient happenings I never heard, or personal stories of which I only heard tangentially before. Brings life to these cuneiform writings! Definitely a worthwhile book on the region & era

Narration often sounded bored or exasperated with effort. First time ever I wished someone other than the author would read the book. Forward and post by author were nice additions, though.

Story
Stylish and camera-obsessed, Naomi and Nathan thrive on the yellow journalism of the social-media age. They are lovers and competitors - nomadic freelancers in pursuit of sensation and depravity, encountering each other only in airport hotels and browser windows. Naomi finds herself drawn to the headlines surrounding Célestine and Aristide Arosteguy, Marxist philosophers and sexual libertines. Célestine has been found dead and mutilated in her Paris apartment. Aristide has disappeared.

Exactly some Cronenberg!
Reviewed: 11-06-23
Like his films this book evokes a noir and unapologetic sexuality towards the dark or grotesque (by society's accepted norms). As usual, however, it would be a mistake to presume his works are ever about body horror just for body horror's sake.
Simply classic Cronenberg, and a well-written example of that! Fans are likely enjoy the addition. I'd easily read another book of his.
Unfortunately, it's a pity about the choice of narrator here. Great voice in itself, but I had to speed this up and yet the narrator still sometimes spoke so inexplicably glacially that I actually stopped to look in a physical copy of the book to see if Cronenberg had made some playful House of Leaves-style font play. He had not. I've no idea what's up with this recording/narrator situation, but eventually I tolerated it just for the story.

Thru the Binary Mentality of a Master Chessplayer
Reviewed: 10-07-23
If the book's title is what drew your curiosity enough to pay, it's best to start midway or so on CH14 to get to the point.
Ultimately, this AI-familiar Chessmaster might have made an arguably worthwhile book if he had only coordinated with a diverse and *living* set of "Master" players in the field of Human-sexuality (read: sexual psychologists, sexologists, and/or even longtime sex workers) as partner author/editors. With assistance, he could have been able to offer some actual credence to opining over future matters of ethics and human sexuality with androids/robots.
As it is, it's a poorly edited musing of a doddering layperson eventually asserting their androcentric and invariably binary (⚫ vs ⚪) comprehension of how "things" - human or otherwise - operate.

Story
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Best narration I've heard for any book! It breathes life again into this well-written classic. With the book itself I recognized many elements of relevance to the world we still live in. As long as I am able, thanks to the narrator, I'll likely give it a relisten from time to time as I would reread it before now.

There are plenty of good stories I'd like to re-read, but honestly I had a hard time listening to this with Ms. Whitaker's lisp for every ch, j, and sh sound for every. single. story. I know she's a voice actor, but I have no idea if she just had a new retainer in or what. Nice voice, but just not the best choice for an audio book.

Needs editing for the overlong story and a narrator who can do more differences in voices. I thought it could be better so I trudged through, but such a struggle I ultimately would not recommend it.
