Story
Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

An important and needed telling of American sacrifice in Vietnam
Reviewed: 09-04-24
This was an honest and compelling story about female nurse volunteers in Vietnam. The horrors and redemptions. Although the unfolding of the story was somewhat predictable in places, ( the surprises not so surprising) the historical accuracy was appreciated. For lovers of historical fiction, there is little focused on Vietnam and this was really an important story to bring to the forefront. I was captivated from the start and throughout the story. Well done.

All too real

An engaging and suspenseful read. The author presents plausible scenarios of what the world could become after a catastrophe. It’s a wake up call for preparedness.

Story
In 1954, 63-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow.

Engaging biographical novel

I enjoyed the story based on actual events. If not based on actual events it would seem far fetched. I enjoyed the weaving in of the history of the times. I found the heroines daily struggles a bit repetitive.

A soap opera
Reviewed: 02-17-22
Although the end was satisfying, it was a long and repetitive soap opera to get there. If you enjoy a tawdry who is sleeping with who’s best friend, this is for you. The story is set in Portugal which would have been nice but there was nothing in the story that described the country, culture history or people. That was disappointing.
