One of Bill's worst
Reviewed: 06-03-23
I have read most all his books and love him. this is a poor book. so many interviews in it sound terrible. you have to strain to hear them. More political than most of his books. Towards the end I found myself skipping to the next chapter because it was boring me. Read a Bryson book, just NOT this one.

Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

Cal shares how the small-town values with which he was raised helped him guide Dollar General from family enterprise to national powerhouse.

I read another Steven rinella book and was not particularly thrilled with it. My adult son is the one who asked me to read the author and I told him I wasn't thrilled. He suggested I read the American buffalo. Good call!. interesting how the author narrates the history of the Buffalo and incorporates it back and forth into his hunting trip for a buffalo. Sometimes I get a little lost when authors jump back and forth like that, but in this case it is well done and you hardly notice it's happening. If you are squeamish about hunting you probably shouldn't read this book.

from the moment this book started this book, I struggled to listen. the reader does not have the worst voice, but she has the worst voice for this book. she should be reading a romance novel not a book about the rugged Alaska. I thought maybe it was just me, but when I played some for my wife and adult daughter they both said oh my God, that's horrible. the book has short chapters and its a little dated at this point. I get halfway through it and deleted it.

this book was somewhat mediocre to me. I think the author did his homework. but I think the book is written for very technical nuclear engineers. he gets carried away with model numbers of Geiger counters and may give a one minute speech about all the different models of some neutron counter. he will say something is 20 to the 17th power plus 5 rather than saying it's about 20% increase over the last model.

I am a big fan of Bill Bryson. But this book, especially the last third of it was a big disappointment. the last one third of the book is just him reading a bunch of his random newspaper articles. very political. almost like he was just trying to fill up the book without having to do a lot of work.

author is pretty full of himself.

although the story was okay I struggled with the fact that the author was so full of himself. Fairly normal in the story for a chapter to start "the three of us had a meeting" and then I I I after that. the reader was a little dramatic also for me and I chuckled to myself that the author probably picked him. Sometimes a little hard to follow the story as he jumps around a lot two different killers and then back to the original one. overall it was okay but it could have been a lot better.
