Story
Northern Ireland, spring 1981. Hunger strikes, riots, power cuts, a homophobic serial killer with a penchant for opera, and a young woman’s suicide that may yet turn out to be murder: on the surface, the events are unconnected, but then things—and people—aren’t always what they seem. Detective Sergeant Duffy is the man tasked with trying to get to the bottom of it all. It’s no easy job—especially when it turns out that one of the victims was involved in the IRA but was last seen discussing business with someone from the loyalist Ulster Volunteer Force.

An intense novel

Any additional comments?
Detective Sean Duffy has the aesthetics of a fine arts aficionado and the appetites of a bisexual playboy, both of which, surprisingly, help him solve a series of brutal murders near Belfast in 1981. The dreary war-torn setting adds to the dismal atmosphere of the story. I recommend this to readers who like an intense experience from reading a novel.

Story
Everything about the man is a mystery: the massive ranch in the remote Black Hills of Wyoming that nobody ever visits, the women who live with him, the secret philanthropies, the private airstrip, the sudden disappearances. And especially the persistent rumors that the man’s wealth comes from killing people. Joe Pickett, still officially a game warden but now mostly a troubleshooter for the governor, is assigned to find out what the truth is, but he discovers a lot more than he’d bargained for. There are two other men living up at that ranch. One is a stone-cold killer who takes an instant dislike to Joe.

Suspenseful start, then less interesting

Any additional comments?
This installment of C.J. Box's Joe Pickett series mmediately draws the reader into a suspenseful episode from the point of view of the paid assassin. Unfortunately, the story deflates quickly with cartoonish stereotypes of young people, Westerners, families, and Bad Guys.
The series continues to be popular with my book club, but not with me personally. This particular title was hyper-violent and the self-righteous interior dialogues were tiresome. I guess if I had to choose an element of the story that I found to be original, I would have to say that it was the appearance of not one but two loner-type paid assassins in this story. Their relationship and their separate stories drove the plot when the other Bad Guys were just not interesting.

Manic, but flawed, thriller
Reviewed: 10-09-15
Any additional comments?
The manic fights, chases, and falls in this story are driven by the hopeless desperation of the breathtakingly bizarre characters. My fellow book club members told me that the later books in this series are much better reads.

Story
Cosette Whitlow is a society matron if tiny Bradley, North Carolina, has one. She kindly volunteers for all the town's charities, but isn't nearly as kind to her own family, neighbors, and friends. In fact, Cosette is emphatically disliked by much of the town - including octogenarian Myrtle Clover. And Myrtle knows that dislike in Bradley can quickly turn deadly. No one seems surprised when Cosette's body is discovered during a party she's hosting - she was struck on the head with a croquet mallet.

Classic-style cozy

Any additional comments?
Myrtle Clover excels in solving crime in classic cozy fashion. Although she no longer drives, she gets all around tiny Bradley, North Carolina, either by walking or by convincing friends to give her a lift to where the action and the clues are. Likewise, Myrtle overcomes limitations that others, especially her son Red, want to place upon her due to her advanced age. Myrtle does not give up until justice is served.
My thanks to the author for the complimentary download of this audiobook – it was fun to listen to the well-constructed story and I will be checking out other books in the series. I recommend this title to fans of classic cozies.
