Story
Obituary writer Nadine Barbault doesn’t mind being called “Lady Death”. It suits the ice queen persona she’s cultivated to survive the fast-paced Toronto Herald. So when Nadine learns that famous (and reclusive) author Dot Voline has died, she doesn’t hesitate to run the obituary…only to discover that Dot is very much alive. Nadine’s screw-up has brought Wesley Chen of the rival Spear no end of joy—she’s been a thorn in his extremely ambitious side for years. But the renewed interest in Dot also surfaced chatter about a mysterious past scandal.

Story
The Little House books, which chronicled the pioneer adventures of Laura Ingalls Wilder, are among the most beloved books in the American literary canon. Lesser known is the secret, concealed for decades, of how they came to be. Now, best-selling author Susan Wittig Albert reimagines the fascinating story of Laura's daughter, Rose Wilder Lane, an intrepid world traveler and writer who returned to her parents' Ozark farm, Rocky Ridge, in 1928.

So-so listen.
Reviewed: 04-05-24
The narrator’s accent for Rose was very distracting. With Rose’s background it’s unlikely that she would have sounded anything like that. The story was ok, but not really that interesting, not told in a natural way, and way too wordy. I couldn’t finish it, although I kept trying.

Fun stories. I do prefer the full length ones, though. Some of these solutions were a bit rushed. The narrator was good but some of the mispronounced words were distracting.

From the author of the “engrossing” (People) and “poignant” (Booklist) international best seller The Room on Rue Amélie comes a remarkable and moving story of love, danger, and betrayal: two women in France in the darkest days of World War II and another in present-day America on a quest to uncover the secret that connects them.

A bit unbelievable
Reviewed: 05-25-23
There were an awful lot of coincidences, but the story had a fairly satisfying ending. I thought the narration to be very distracting. Some characters had pseudo French accents at times but none at other times. Inez, who sometimes had a French accent and other times did not, had a very strong accent at the end of the story. It was so distracting to me that I gave up on the audible version and finished it on Kindle. Some of the language used by the characters in the 1940’s parts seemed to be too contemporary for that era. The champagne making parts were interesting.

At the end of the 1990s, with the art market finally recovered from its disastrous collapse, Miss Rebecca Farwell has made a killing at Christie's in New York City, selling a portion of her extraordinary art collection for a rumored 900 percent profit. Dressed in couture YSL, drinking the finest champagne at trendy Balthazar, Reba, as she's known, is the picture of a wealthy art collector. To some, the elusive Miss Farwell is a shark with outstanding business acumen. To others, she's a heartless capitalist whose only interest in art is how much she can make.

This was an interesting tale, but really could have been condensed. It really seemed much too wordy, especially in the first half or so. Some of the language did not ring true for the time. Although I was eager to hear the outcomes, I felt that quite a bit was highly unlikely and unrealistic.

Story
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Pretty good story
Reviewed: 01-14-20
The story wasn’t too bad. It kept me listening, but it was a bit confusing at times. The narrator did a pleasing job except for some glaring (to me) mispronunciations, especially the French. Many French words sounded more Italian. There were other things mispronounced, also. It was very disconcerting.
