Ok. It’s not high art in this genre. But it’s my favorite series and a joy to read (ahem, listen).

Good on multiple levels

I’ve been practicing Buddhism for a number of years. I’ve listened to quite a few books and teachers and been inspired by a few (Particularly by Thich Nhat Hanh and Joseph Goldstein). When I began listening to this, I had a bunch of negative reactions: (“it was too simplistic”, it was “wrong” in one way or another). After a bit of listening, I recalled Thich Nhat Hahn’s comment that teachings are like repeated gentle rains that slowly sink in. This book was like that. It covered a lot of ground that others have covered, but it did so gently, clearly, and in ways I hadn’t encountered. Hence I think this book works both for beginners and for travelers who have been on the road for some time. I enjoyed it.

A fun book (and perhaps an allegory for our times?)
Reviewed: 06-18-19
I downloaded this based on a recommendation from a friend. It was a fun and thoroughly enjoyable listen: excellent story and performance. The willingness of the privileged powerful to use and subsume others makes the story something of an allegory, I guess, but the story stands on its own merit even if I’m just projecting.

Loved this book
Reviewed: 09-05-18
While reading, I vacillated between 3 and 5 stars. Ended up going with 5, for a variety of reasons. First off, it reminded me a great deal of Spoon River Anthology (which I love). I eventually decided this must have been a deliberate tribute, and that pushed my rating up. Second, the location of the story, a place between life and after life, was clever and intriguing. What an interesting locale for a story! Finally, Lincoln in the Bardo is really a mix of major and less important story lines that were made up of (MANY!) engaging characters. About half way through, I thought the stories were unraveling and fraying a bit, but the author pulled them back together nicely at the end. This is one of my favorite reads of the last couple of years. Almost forgot ... the large cast did an excellent job telling the story!
