Story
It starts as a prank - a way to blow off steam after a long summer at Camp Horseshoe. Among the teen counselors, tensions and hormones are running high. No wonder the others agree when Jo-Beth Chancellor suggests they scare Monica O'Neal a little.... or a lot. Monica has it coming, and no one will really get hurt. What could go wrong? Everything.

Waste of a credit. No mystery here, I figured it out before finishing first chapter.

Well bloody damn! That was awesome.
Reviewed: 01-13-15
Would you listen to Golden Son again? Why?
Yes. Maybe immediately even. Right after I relisten to Red Rising. And Why? Because it's awesomeness. And I doubt any other book is going to compare for the rest of the year, so I might as well just take this ride again.
What did you like best about this story?
It's brutal. And hopeful. And it's essentially ancient Rome battling in space with an epic storyline and equal bits of philosophy and action sequences. Plus it's the complete opposite of the "2nd book slump" of some trilogies. No, it's better than the first. Way better even.
Which character – as performed by Tim Gerard Reynolds – was your favorite?
Nero au Augustus - it's just perfect, and the sparse lines that belonged to Ragnar resonated with me. The narration as a whole is quite impressive.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Oh God (deep inhale, bites lip) -- THE END. No spoilers here, but damn. It's going to be a long wait for the 3rd book.
Any additional comments?
I made the mistake of finishing the audio book, in the middle of the day, at work. My concentration is shot in the best of ways! Oh well, it was worth it....maybe I'll be good for something tomorrow...

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he spends his life willingly, knowing that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children. But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and sprawling parks spread across the planet.

Dystopian Hierarchy Done Soooooo Well!
Reviewed: 04-23-14
Would you listen to Red Rising again? Why?
Yes, absolutely. The characters had many nuances, and there were so many with such varied and unusual names - I'd like to hope I didn't miss anything! The story itself was compelling, and I honestly cared for the characters...unlike some books you can compare it to.
What did you like best about this story?
Its certainly in the hierarchy, dystopian, sci-fi fantasy place that's popular right now - but the characters made so much of the story. They are complex...bad and good, well-intentioned often in their own way, privileged but broken, deprived yet empowered. Some are redeemed, some are evil, some are nearly perfect (like Eo)...but...and the big but...you don't necessarily know how each character will remain. They feel real. You can't advance the story in your head 5 chapters and get it right, you can't predict all the choices they'll make. I love that.
Which scene was your favorite?
Darrow building his merry band of rejects!
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Sharpened by hate. Strengthened by love.
Any additional comments?
If you're a fan of the genre - then you will not regret Red Rising. I'm eagerly awaiting Golden Son and most likely won't be able to wait on the AudioBook - so let's see if we can get them both released at the same time!
