Story
Pursued by enemies, exiled Liaden clan Korval is settling into a new base on backworld Surebleak. Moving is expensive, as is war, and Korval is strapped for cash. Delm Korval has therefore instructed Master Trader Shan yos'Galan to design and implement new trade routes, quickly. But this is no easy task. Dutiful Passage is targeted by Korval's enemies, denied docking at respectable ports, and cheated by those less respectable. Struggling to recuperate from an attack on his life, while managing daughter Padi’s emerging psychic talents, Shan is running out of options - and time.

Exiled from Liad after bombing a city to save it from The Department of the Interior’s infernal weapons and plans, Clan Korval has gone to ground on the back-water planet Surebleak, whose people are as untamed as its weather. The old Boss-controlled fiefdoms largely fell to Pat Rin yos’Phelium’s influence, but the world is restive, the influx of outworld lawyers, guns, and money a brewpot for armed dissatisfaction.

The Complex Logic Laws were the result of a war waged hundreds of years in the past, when two human powers threw massive AI navies at each other and nearly annihilated themselves. Being human, they blamed their tools for this near miss; they destroyed what was left of the sentient ships, and made it illegal to be, manufacture, or shelter an independent logic.

Great book! A lot of plot elements for the story arc and series made it to Neogenesis. It leaves me wanting more. I definitely wish there was a better narrator, I can’t tell who is talking- all the characters sound the same.

The first book was great, 2nd and 3rd are exactly the same characters, same personalities. ALL OF THEM. The only difference is their names and the underlying question “will the AI live or die.” After reading the 3rd installment, I won’t be continuing the series.

I'm listening to this again because the last 2 books in the series have recently been released and I felt I needed a refresher as to what was going on in the series so far. I meant to just skip through it quickly and get on to the next ones, but it's such a delightfully fun listen that I found myself not wanting to just get on with it, but to relax, listen and enjoy. In my book, that's what makes a 5-star.

I Couldn't Stop Listening! I loved it!

I really enjoyed this book, I will be recommending it to all my friends- something I don't do often, it's a great start to what looks to be a fun series. I ended up losing 4 hours of sleep because I couldn't stop listening. I get excited when I can add someone new to my Author Watch List, and I've now added Phillipa Bornikova! Im glad I ignored Robin's bad review. IncidentalIy, I was going to skip this book originally because of that bad review, but when I decided to check other sites for reviews (i.e. Amazon, Goodreads) all I found were good reviews - except, wierdly, by another review posted by "Robin" on the same day who also couldn't find anything good about the book, and who claimed to not even be able to finish reading her kindle edition and send it back requesting a refund. Is she talking about this book??? She certainly has gone to a lot of trouble to buy the book in different formats just to be able to post super negative reviews........mmmmm, I love a good mystery. Anyway, I don't often post reviews, but since this is a new book from a new author I didn't want anyone who might be wavering to pass this gem up just because of one bad review.

This book is Mr. Sanderson's second book and is a vast improvement! The narrator is horrible, it is as if he is reading to intellect-impaired toddlers -- but if you listen in double time it is ok.

I tried to like it
Reviewed: 12-01-10
I absolutely love the Mistborn Trilogy and The Way of Kings, so I thought I'd give Elantris (his first novel) a chance. I REALLY wanted to like it, I tried so hard! I failed. I understood the world in which the author was trying to create, but I was not engrossed by it. I don't care about the characters at all, all they do is spout platitudes. It just seemed flat, and lacking somehow. I got tired of listening, and set my iPod at double speed just to get through it. Thankfully, the author has improved his writing by leaps and bounds since this first attempt.
