Everything and more of what I hoped it would be. I hope her life went at least as well as it did in the story.

Story
Montana 1925: Three brave kids from New York board the orphan train headed west. An Irish boy who lost his whole family to Spanish flu, a tiny girl who won’t talk, and a volatile young man who desperately needs to escape Hell’s Kitchen. They are paraded on platforms across the Midwest to work-worn folks and journey countless miles, racing the sun westward. Before they reach the last rejection and stop, the kids come up with a daring plan, and they set off toward the Yellowstone River and grassy mountains where the wild horses roam.

Story
It seems straightforward to Attorney Nate Shepherd: a middle-aged billionaire dies while celebrating at a wedding reception. The grief-stricken family lashes out, though, blaming the billionaire’s date for his death. When the family brings all of its power to bear, the wheels of local justice threaten to overwhelm the woman. As Nate Shepherd steps in to defend her, he tries to deflect the misplaced anger that’s directed at the woman for the tragedy. But as the investigation progresses, a tangled history unravels, including unexpected ties to Nate’s own life.

Great story, great characters and terrific narration

I just found this author and must say he rates right up there with the best. I’ve read the first in the series and now finished this one and can happily say they were both enjoyable enough that I couldn’t put them down. I went straight on to this one the same day I finished the first one. Without giving anything away, I’ll just add there was a nice twist in this story. Well worth the read. I’ll be finishing the series and looking forward to more of his books.

Story
Ada promised herself she would never go back to the Trace, to her unbearable life on the swamp, and to her harsh father in Mississippi. But now, after running away to Baton Rouge and briefly knowing a different kind of life, she finds herself with nowhere to go but back home. Matilda, daughter of a sharecropper, is from the other side of the Trace. Doing what she can to protect her family from the whims and demands of some particularly callous locals is an ongoing struggle, so she forms a plan to go north.

Narrator drove me INSANE!!

I have no idea how good the story was. Seems it’s might be good but I couldn’t finish because the woman reading it was horrible. She might be a good person to read poetry but her sentence inflection is all wrong. Made me want to pull my hair out and couldn’t concentrate on the story

Tender story but narrator caused it to not be as enjoyable
Reviewed: 06-10-20
I very much enjoyed the story. I have trouble at times though trying to concentrate on it because of the narrator. It seemed like he ended almost sentence using uptalk. Anyone who reads professionally should know better. His attempt to use different female character voices was horrible.
