Emery Blackwood’s life changed forever the night her best friend was found dead and the love of her life, August Salt, was accused of murdering her. Years later, she is doing what her teenage self swore she never would: living a quiet existence on the misty, remote shores of Saoirse Island and running the family’s business, Blackwood’s Tea Shoppe Herbal Tonics & Tea Leaf Readings. The storyline is boring. The characters are cardboard cut-outs. The female lead narrator places emphasis on every other word. I need to stop making purchase choices based on reviews.

Terrible Narrator
Reviewed: 08-09-22
I have no idea if the story or dialogue has merit because the narrator is dreadful. She speaks as if she doesn’t understand the words she is saying. She places emphasis on the wrong words. From what I understand, this narrator has done good work in the past, so it’s strange that she would so utterly bomb on this book. I wonder if the author had a chance to listen to the audio before it was published. I would be furious.

Confusing & disappointing
Reviewed: 08-02-22
I listened to about 5 episodes. Each one starts out promising but eventually becomes confusing. I realize that the people telling their stories are not professional podcasters, but they are often repetitive while leaving out important details. The end result is that the stories don’t make sense. Worse, the stories are interrupted without warning by ads or odd silences. A two-part story was separated without explanation by two intervening episodes about the practice of gaslighting. A professional editor is needed to save this podcast.

Story
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

Meandering and Dreary
Reviewed: 11-15-19
Although Patchett sets a good scene with well developed characters, the story wanders aimlessly back and forth in time. Occasionally, expectations are raised by promising plot twists that never deliver. The story is sad without the payoff of satisfying outcomes. Tom Hanks reads well but he doesn’t have much to work with. Disappointing.
