Bait and Switch, sorry Carl your wife is a terrible narrator.
Reviewed: 06-29-23
I love Carl Sagan, and part of the joy of his work is his narration and inflection.
He only narrates 10% of this the other 11 plus hours is his wife. Just horrible.

On his last combat deployment, Lt. Cmdr. James Reece's entire team was killed in an ambush that also claimed the lives of the aircrew sent in to rescue them. But when those dearest to him are murdered on the day of his homecoming, Reece discovers that this was not an act of war by a foreign enemy but a conspiracy that runs to the highest levels of government. Now, with no family and free from the military's command structure, Reece applies the lessons that he's learned in over a decade of constant warfare toward revenge.

Really good read, satisfying for those of us who like to see our protagonist kick butt. I gave the story 4 stars only because this guy had so many over the top helpful friends it pushed believability a tad.

Story
Ex-CIA master assassin Court Gentry has always prided himself on his ability to disappear at will, to fly below the radar and exist in the shadows - to survive as the near-mythical Gray Man. But when he takes revenge upon a former employer who betrayed him, he exposes himself to something he’s never had to face before. A killer who is just like him. Code-named Dead Eye, Russell Whitlock is a graduate of the same ultra-secret Autonomous Asset Program that trained and once controlled Gentry.

Story
It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

I listened to the end so I could give a fair review. The description mentions magic but if I knew the story was all about witches, elves, fairies, shape shifters, etc etc I would not have purchased. besides that weirdness the writing was just amateurish and barely entertaining. I got the feeling Nora Roberts was about 13 years old.

Life couldn’t be better…until Andrew begins to pick up on the facts that (1) every Away Mission involves some kind of lethal confrontation with alien forces; (2) the ship’s captain, its chief science officer, and the handsome Lieutenant Kerensky always survive these confrontations; and (3) at least one low-ranked crew member is, sadly, always killed.
