Story
In 1761, a tiny, odd-looking girl named Marie is born in a village in Switzerland. After the death of her parents, she is apprenticed to an eccentric wax sculptor and whisked off to the seamy streets of Paris, where they meet a domineering widow and her quiet, pale son. Together, they convert an abandoned monkey house into an exhibition hall for wax heads, and the spectacle becomes a sensation. As word of her artistic talent spreads, Marie is called to Versailles, where she tutors a princess and saves Marie Antoinette in childbirth. But outside the palace walls, Paris is roiling....

Remains a towering achievement

It had been a long time since I read A Wizard of Earthsea. Ursula K. LeGuin’s writing is masterful and her world-building equally so. This is not a rollicking high fantasy full of fun and constant entertainment, which by the way I very much enjoy, no it is something deep and dark and mysterious, like staring into a well that occasionally erupts into a view of a many colored crystalline grotto. I don’t know if that makes sense and I do not wish to “damn with faint praise. LeGuin is wonderful and the world will miss her. Perhaps she can return as Segoy and raise new wonders of the imagination.

Story
Jo Jones has always had a little trouble fitting in. As a neurodivergent, hyperlexic book editor and divorced New Yorker transplanted into the English countryside, Jo doesn’t know what stands out more: her Americanisms or her autism. After losing her job, her mother, and her marriage all in one year, she couldn’t be happier to take possession of a possibly haunted (and clearly unwanted) family estate in North Yorkshire. But when the body of the moody town groundskeeper turns up on her rug with three bullets in his back, Jo finds herself in potential danger—and she’s also a potential suspect.

A very enjoyable (multiple) mystery novel, excellently written, engaging with fully realized characters. The crowning achievement of the latter is the vivid descriptions of the brilliant protagonist’s thoughts and experiences through the lens of autism.

Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

Story
Jame is a Kencyr. Kencyrs are not native to the planet where they now live. For 30 centuries they have been the weapon that their Three-Faced God has used against the power of the Perimal Darkling. Jame knows this as she stumbles out of the hilly, barren Haunted Lands into the city of Tai-tastigon. But she knows little else. She does not remember where she has been or what she has done for the last 10 years of her life. Her memory goes back only a week or two - to finding her home destroyed and all her family dead.

Story
Khaavren of the House of Tiassa is a son of landless nobility, possessor of a good sword and “tolerably well-acquainted with its use.” Along with three loyal friends, he enthusiastically seeks out danger and excitement. But in a realm renowned for repartee and betrayals, where power is as mutable as magic, a young man like Khaavren, newly come from the countryside, had best be wary. His life depends on it. And so does the future of Draegara.

Needs labels!
Reviewed: 08-21-23
Though I’m still early on (just finished Little Women) this looks to be a fantastic collection.
Problem is there are no chapter labels and so with 120something hours and hundreds of chapters it is very easy to get lost. I recommend a pencil and pad to help keep track, especially if you are one such as I who have a tendency to fall asleep while listening.
