This is a book set in the WWII, but is not focused on the terrible crimes committed against the German prisoners, but rather on the enduring power of hope, forgiveness, and the indomitable human spirit.
Highly recommend it.

A Captivating Ode to Love, Fate, and Heroism
Reviewed: 05-29-23
The Song of Achilles, written by Madeline Miller, is an exquisite masterpiece that gracefully brings to life one of Greek mythology's most iconic tales. Blending history and mythology with a touch of romance, Miller weaves an enchanting narrative that captures the essence of human emotions, illuminates the complexity of relationships, and explores the true meaning of heroism.
At the heart of this epic is the tender and powerful bond between Patroclus, an exiled prince, and Achilles, the legendary hero of the Trojan War. From their initial meeting as young boys to their tumultuous journey through adolescence and war. Miller's portrayal of their relationship is both delicate and intense, filling the pages with vulnerability and unwavering loyalty.
Miller's writing style is as poetic as the legends themselves. Her prose glides effortlessly, painting vivid scenes of ancient Greece, immersing the reader in a world of gods and mortals. She masterfully combines vivid descriptions with introspective moments, capturing the inner struggles and desires of her characters. The author's meticulous research is evident, as she seamlessly incorporates elements of Greek mythology, weaving them into the fabric of the story with authenticity and reverence.

Story
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

This is a true tale of grit and determination; survival against incredible odds peppered with, camaraderie and unbelievable stoicism. This tale of British explorer Ernest Shackleton's 1914 attempt to reach the South Pole, one of the greatest adventure stories of the modern age.
Shackleton was a true leader and left no man behind. He put himself at risk for his men over and over and we can all learn from his heroism.
Endurance made my top 10 reads of all time and I really recommend it.

If The Lord of the Flies and The Shining had a love child you would get FantasticLand. Written in an investigative journalist style it has the feel of a documentary, but is (luckily) fiction.
The book is very violent at times and some scenes will stay with me forever 18+

Story
George Orwell's nineteen Eighty-Four is one of the most definitive texts of modern literature. Set in Oceania, one of the three inter-continental superstate that divided the world among themselves after a global war, Orwell's masterful critique of the political structures of the time, works itself out through the story of Winston Smith, a man caught in the webs of a dystopian future, and his clandestine love affair with Julia, a young woman he meets during the course of his work for the government.

Disturbingly relevant for 2021

A true work of genius, as well as my all-time favorite and least favorite novel (here I exercise doublethink) it's truly a masterpiece. It's rather uncomfortable to read, and parts can be somewhat confusing, but it's all worth it not just for the terrifyingly clever political messages, but also the excellent characters.
The book is terrifying and leaves a poor taste in your mouth, but it's powerful and effective. More than anything, it makes you think about the world and society in a different way, changing your worldview forever. Above all, it's brilliant, and one everyone should have read/listen to at least once.

It is 1981. Glasgow is dying and good families must grift to survive. Agnes Bain has always expected more from life. She dreams of greater things: a house with its own front door and a life bought and paid for outright (like her perfect, but false, teeth). But Agnes is abandoned by her philandering husband, and soon she and her three children find themselves trapped in a decimated mining town. As she descends deeper into drink, the children try their best to save her, yet one by one they must abandon her to save themselves. It is her son Shuggie who holds out hope the longest.

The narrator was absolutely brilliant and added to the enjoyment of this book.

A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara is an immensely powerful and heartbreaking novel of brotherly love and the limits of human endurance. When four graduates from a small Massachusetts college move to New York to make their way, they're broke, adrift and buoyed only by their friendship and ambition. Over the decades, their relationships deepen and darken, tinged by addiction, success and pride.

The performance was brilliant. I found myself looking for more books narrated by Oliver. He's ability to portray emotion and subtle character difference greatly contributed to my enjoyment of this book.
I highly recommended A Little Life if you are open to the unease of this tragic story.

2012 marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of C. S. Lewis’s classic, Mere Christianity. Having sold over half a million copies in the UK alone, his overview of Christianity has been imitated many times, but never outdone. Mere Christianity brings together Lewis’s legendary broadcasts from the war years; talks in which he set out simply to ‘"explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times."
