Story
Born in 1945, Ruth J. Simmons grew up the twelfth child of sharecroppers. Her first home had no running water, no electricity, no books to read. Yet despite this—or, in her words, because of it—Simmons would become the first Black president of an Ivy League university. The former president of Smith College, Brown University, and Prairie View A&M, Texas’s oldest HBCU, Simmons has inspired generations of students as she herself made history.

Inspiring
Reviewed: 06-21-24
I was really inspired by how Ruth’s curiosity piqued with great mentors led to her continued success in life. Even more, her desire to be like others eventually led to her finding herself which is something I wouldn’t have originally thought..but it makes sense- the impact of others molds our identity .
Overall, Ruth’s story is that of not letting one’s self be defined by stereotypes but how they want to be defined. And, it really does take a village, no one person is self-made.

Story
Myrlie Louise Beasley met Medgar Evers on her first day of college. They fell in love at first sight, married just one year later, and Myrlie left school to focus on their growing family. Medgar became the field secretary for the Mississippi branch of the NAACP, charged with beating back the most intractable and violent resistance to black voting rights in the country. Myrlie served as Medgar’s secretary and confidant, working hand in hand with him as they struggled against public accommodations and school segregation, lynching, violence, and sheer despair within their state’s “black belt.”

This book not only told us about Medgar Evers’ story, but of something that is often mentioned but never analyzed in civil rights stories: love. For it was love that brought change. And it was the love that Myrlie and Medgar had for each other that allowed him to keep going, to work toward making a difference. I really enjoyed listening to this book and the insightful perspective it provided.

Dr. Paul Farmer was more than a doctor. What set him apart from others? Even other doctors? He truly wanted to be there for his patients, no matter the environment he was in. He aimed to serve the underrepresented and mistreated, and support them through their tough journeys. He made this his life's mission. His commitment to Haiti was phenomenal. His commitment to public service was phenomenal. I have so much respect for his life; he is very inspiring. His legacy will live on :)

Story
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells - taken without her knowledge - became one of the most important tools in medicine: The first “immortal” human cells grown in culture, which are still alive today, though she has been dead for more than 60 years. HeLa cells were vital for developing the polio vaccine; uncovered secrets of cancer, viruses, and the atom bomb’s effects.

This story brings one into the life of Henrietta lacks. It explains her upbringing and what led to her cells becoming immortal. But, the story does more than just that. It delves into her family members and describes how they were impacted by her death and then finding out a part of her was still alive. Through this, it puts a face to more than just Henrietta- her family, too. It further connects relevant topics like consent with scientific research to depict the injustices of Henrietta’s case. The story also effectively explains scientific materials with an understanding, leveled vocabulary. Overall, I really enjoyed listening to this audible and felt it connected me further to the world of science; a path I am inspired to embark on!

Story
In this lyrical, unsentimental, and compelling memoir, the son of a Black African father and a White American mother searches for a workable meaning to his life as a Black American. It begins in New York, where Barack Obama learns that his father - a figure he knows more as a myth than as a man - has been killed in a car accident. This sudden death inspires an emotional odyssey - first to a small town in Kansas, from which he retraces the migration of his mother’s family to Hawaii, and then to Kenya, where he meets the African side of his family.

Barack Obama’s upbringing wasn’t indicative of his future success. Through this story depicting his journey, one sees how he grew through self-reflection and how his identity became an important means to find himself. One part of his identity was his “unknown” father. As Obama chased the shadow of his father, his perspective changed and by the end of the story, he had made peace with his father’s roots and set out to continue his own unique journey. Very great listen and inspiring!

Story
Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race”, a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of Black women and men - bodies exploited through slavery and segregation and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden? Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’ attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son.

I listened to this book during bike rides and walks. During this time, I was brought into Coates’s world. The story’s perspective allowed it to be directed toward me which was very engaging.
It was so fascinating to see how the world he was brought up in and his own exploration shaped his views and how he wanted to raise his son. It further depicted how the “Dreamer’s,” hold the cards while we can only strive to make it.
So yes, I’d suggest this to those aiming to open their mind and perspective! Phenomenal reading!
