Story
A powerful, moving memoir - and a practical guide to healing - written by Dr. Edith Eva Eger, an eminent psychologist whose own experiences as a Holocaust survivor help her treat patients and allow them to escape the prisons of their own minds. The Choice weaves Eger's personal story with case studies from her work as a psychologist. Her patients and their stories illustrate different phases of healing and show how people can choose to escape the prisons they construct in their minds and find freedom, regardless of circumstance.

I did not want to put this book down. Enthralling story telling with profound lessons of how to grow from unimaginable suffering and trauma to surviving to thriving. I am very grateful Dr. Eger lived, told her life story, and in her lifetime provided inspiration to so many. I believe she has enriched and saved many lives. Thank you.

A mix of a history of one aspect of child welfare in the US in the last century, mystery, love story, two opposite ends of white cultural, past and present presented in alternating chapters, and self-reflection.
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to from beginning to end. Excellent vocal variety, vivid descriptions and full bodied word pictures. Author and narrator brought every perspective of the narrative alive.

Story
What happened to Islamic reform? Why have al Qaeda and Boko Haram become the faces of contemporary Islam? Why has the Arab Spring devolved into a battle over sharia law? Continuing her personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard and American citizenship, the New York Times best-selling author of Infidel and Nomad crafts a powerful call for an Islamic reformation as the only way to end the current wave of global violence and repression of women.

The most profound, insightful and solutionary book
Reviewed: 09-23-17
I have just finished listening to Ayann Hirshi Ali's profound and inspiring book, "Heretic." Ali is a very articulate, courageous, free and solutionary thinker with a fatwa on her that does not stop her speaking out on behalf of human rights. If you haven't read it I encourage you to - and to read it from cover to cover for a well researched broad and first hand understanding of her subject. U may have read her first book, "Infidel" which I thought was the most profound book I had ever read and find, "Heretic" equally profound with credible peaceful solutions. I have deep appreciation , gratitude and admiration for Ali's courage to write this comprehensive understanding of the challenges the world is facing today. Many , even liberals, choose to be afraid to acknowledge the source of the challenges, and in so doing become part of the problem versus part of the solution. While part of me feels deeply sad and shame on behalf of those involved with Brandeis university who voted to reverse the offer to Ali of an honory degree, my hope is that in some way the outrage of free thinkers who equate this action to equal if Brandeis had made the same decision with Soviet dissidents Yelena Bonner, Andrei Sakharov, Solzhenitsyn, and the many other brave dissidents, to name only a few, Sojourner Truth, Mahatma Gandhi, Aung San Suu Kyi, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, and Malala Yousafzai for their stand on human rights. Ali stands for a universal equal peaceful way forward. Brave outspoken activists/dissidents helped move all development forward, including the right for all in the Western world to vote, equality, end to slavery, and many humanitarian solutions. The dissidents were often, like Ali, ignored, denied, and punished while they courageously risked their lives in the service of humanity. I want to see Ali recognized during her lifetime versus posthumously for her remarkable, brave and consistent contribution to humanity. I want more thinking people to join her. Who will match her foresight and bravery? Reading this book and sharing it as widely as possible offers an education and understanding many of us are sadly missing.

Story
With the coruscating gaze that informed The Sympathizer, in The Refugees Viet Thanh Nguyen gives voice to lives led between two worlds, the adopted homeland and the country of birth. From a young Vietnamese refugee who suffers profound culture shock when he comes to live with two gay men in San Francisco, to a woman whose husband is suffering from dementia and starts to confuse her for a former lover, to a girl living in Ho Chi Minh City whose older half sister comes back from America having seemingly accomplished everything she never will.

Story
Feelings of abandonment filled Helen at a too-young age when her mother died and her father walked out. Left in the care of her sister, Claire, she moved on, but never truly healed. Now thirty-five, married, and starting her own family, she must confront her inability to bear children by accepting the idea of adopting. But just when Helen experiences holding her new baby for the first time, she is blindsided with the worst possible news: Claire has cancer. Helen’s wounds are again torn open as she balances the delight of parenthood with the grief of her ailing sister.A poignant and probing exploration of life and loss, Daughters for a Time is a tale of unconditional love, the destructive and healing powers of family, and the search for solid ground between pain and joy.

Helpful read for prospective adopting parents
Reviewed: 08-27-17
Readers interested in adopting and people dealing with the loss of a family member would possibly find this book very helpful and interesting. At my age I am not interested in adopting. I prefer to have to extrapolate myself rather than listen to a blow by blow narration. Some readers would love the detail and enjoy the numerous levels of familial relationship. When I start a book unless it is very bad I finish listening so I listened to the very end. The ending was predictable.

Before John Glenn orbited the Earth or Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, a group of dedicated female mathematicians known as "human computers" used pencils, slide rules, and adding machines to calculate the numbers that would launch rockets and astronauts into space. Among these problem solvers were a group of exceptionally talented African American women, some of the brightest minds of their generation.

Story
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.
