A humble hero
Reviewed: 08-23-24
Excellent story. The description of the landscape was as though you were there, taking in the beauty of the wilderness. The bad guys were really bad, and the protagonist was a humble hero. The love story was as sweet as any love story should be. I hope there is a sequel!

Sheryl Woods never disappoints her readers

Great story, the characters were interesting and we'll developed. It kept me guessing how it would end until the last few chapters; it was riveting enough to keep my attention to the very end. I felt like I could relate to both Sarah and Raylene--especially Sarah. I had a marriage very similar to her first marriage. Her reactions to circumstances are the sort of reactions I had for a long time afterward.
I would have preferred an actual male voice for the male characters, the narrator made the two main men (Travis and Walter) sound alike. I've read many of the authors books and have enjoyed them all

Story
My lady, Fiammetta Bianchini, was plucking her eyebrows and biting color into her lips when the unthinkable happened and the Holy Roman Emperor’s army blew a hole in the wall of God’s eternal city, letting in a flood of half-starved, half-crazed troops bent on pillage and punishment. Thus begins In the Company of the Courtesan, Sarah Dunant’s epic novel of life in Renaissance Italy. Escaping the sack of Rome in 1527, with their stomachs churning on the jewels they have swallowed, the courtesan Fiammetta and her dwarf companion, Bucino, head for Venice.

Controversial subject matter
Reviewed: 08-19-24
I did not care for the subject matter-prostitution, as well as it being biased and anti catholic. The storyline evolved around overcoming adversity, but the characters had little or no moral ethics.
