Story
Philip Carey, a sensitive orphan born with a clubfoot, finds himself in desperate need of passion and inspiration. He abandons his studies to travel, first to Heidelberg and then to Paris, where he nurses ambitions of becoming a great artist. Philip's youthful idealism erodes, however, as he comes face-to-face with his own mediocrity and lack of impact on the world. After returning to London to study medicine, he becomes wildly infatuated with Mildred, a vulgar, tawdry waitress, and begins a doomed love affair.

A Rare Peek into the Weird and Troubled World of Scientology
Reviewed: 04-14-18
The author tackles the subject of scientology and describes growing up in the dysfunctional, all encompassing world that practitioners of that faith must endure. She does a nice job of explaining the tenants of this cult and doesn’t shy from expressing her view and exposing the hypocrisy of scientology. At times the author comes off a raw, crass and harsh but she shouldn’t be faulted for this style. It’s exactly that approach and mentality that allowed her to escape the stranglehold of an organization based on brainwashing, crazy-making and control. Ms. Remini is authentic in her bawdy style. Without that grit, we wouldn’t have this portal into the cult that is scientology.

This is a well-researched and nicely presented summary of five of the US’s Founding Fathers and the influence, love and contributions of the women in their lives. Recommended for anyone hoping to learn general histories of our earliest politicians, the events of the forming of the nation and the roles of the women who surrounded the male history makers.

Story
Who formed the first literate society? Who invented our modern ideas of democracy and free market capitalism? The Scots. As historian and author Arthur Herman reveals, in the 18th and 19th centuries Scotland made crucial contributions to science, philosophy, literature, education, medicine, commerce, and politics - contributions that have formed and nurtured the modern West ever since. This book is not just about Scotland: it is an exciting account of the origins of the modern world.

Wonderful Well Organized History of Influential Scots and Scottish Culture
Reviewed: 03-24-18
This book presented a well organized and succinct history of many of Scotland’s most advanced thinkers and doers. I am traveling to Scotland in a few weeks and hoped to gain some general insight into Scottish history and culture. I couldn’t have chosen a better book for this objective.
