An excellent listen with obsession on pop culture
Reviewed: 03-22-21
Ready Player One takes you to the future where earth's resources are exhausted. Wade Watts is your typical american teenager addicted to The Oasis an online virtual world the rules a large part of the World's Economy. For years people have been unable to find the creator's Easter egg that when found and unlocked can grant them ownership of the Oasis and it's vast resources.
This audio book simply put is an injection of decades old pop culture to your ears. It is an excellent listen with Wil Wheaton doing the narration. It is immersive and interesting. However the story can get a bit repetitive which is why I knocked out one star. If you are into science fiction, virtual reality, gaming, or a geek then pick this audio book up.
You probably heard this before so what are you waiting for it's time to listen to one of the best science fiction pop culture audio books in the world. My hat tips to Ernest Cline.

Story
For his victims, for their families and for the investigators tasked with finding him, the senselessness and brutality of the Golden State Killer's acts were matched only by the powerlessness they felt at failing to uncover his identity. Then, on April 24, 2018, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo at his home in Citrus Heights, Calif., based on DNA evidence linked to the crimes. Amazingly, it seemed, evil finally had a name. Please note: This work contains descriptions of violent crime and sexual assault and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Story
College professor Stephen Barlow needs cash. Badly. He puts his skepticism aside and signs on to a paranormal research organization in the hopes of scoring a fat bonus. Enter Chaythe Asylum: a long-shuttered and controversial institution where patients were allegedly subjected to unethical experiments. Stephen deems the old building, closed in 1989 after a series of grisly murders, as good a place as any to explore the possibility of the supernatural, and arranges to take a tour with his students. But it turns out that the asylum is not as abandoned as it seems. There is something sinister in the building.

A light horror audio book.

This audio is decent at it's core but don't come in expecting to get frightened. If you something easy on the ears and want to introduce someone to the horror genre this would be that book. Overall the performance is great and I really like the description about the sandwich the professor eats in the beginning of the story. I was satisfied by it's conclusion but be aware this is part 1 of a trilogy. It's recommended for ages 15 and up.
