Too many characters
Reviewed: 01-10-25
Very hard to keep track of so many characters in different gangs. Probably fewer characters would have helped the story line. I liked the “hero” Van… not Jack Reacher but an interesting backstory. Might try another book in this series.

Story
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Historical fiction at its best

Totally enjoyable book. Provides an authentic picture of life in 1780’s America. Lots of characters, strong plot. Mostly, the story’s power is in the strong voice of Martha, whose character is well-developed and so likable. Wife, mother, midwife, friend; Martha’s kindness, professionalism and wisdom shine. And she was a real person whom we get to know through her daily diary and the skillful storytelling of Ariel Loghon. Jane Oppenheimer brings Martha to life in her flawless narration. Good work!

Don’t waste your time!

I love audio books. That said, this is the first time I’ve experienced a reader who butchered the book. Her perky delivery made this into a bad romance novel instead of a book abut the bridge. Terrible reader.
The book is odd. There are lots of interesting stories about the building of the bridge but they are overshadowed by Emily’s dabbling in the women’s movement and dallying with PT Barnum. She comes across as a frivolous woman. Spoiler alert: many of the key plot points are totally fictional. Read the afterword first and you’ll find that the plot is a lie.
This is fiction pretending to be historical.
