Story
In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, the United States severed diplomatic relations with Cuba, where a momentous revolution had taken power three years earlier. For more than half a century, the stand-off continued—through the tenure of ten American presidents and the fifty-year rule of Fidel Castro. His death in 2016, and the retirement of his brother and successor Raúl Castro in 2021, have spurred questions about the country’s future. Spanning more than five centuries, Cuba provides us with a front-row seat as we witness the evolution of the modern nation.

Long but very satisfying history of Cuba
Reviewed: 03-23-22
I really knew very little about the history of Cuba and thought I should know more. Ms Ferrer gave me what I wanted in great detail. I cannot remember all the names, but the events and their relation to the history of the United States were memorable. I was particularly interested in the history of the revolution which put Fidel Castro into power since that happened when I was a young woman raising a family and did not find time to take a great deal of interest in politics. Her emphasis in each part of the book on how the common people were affected was most informative. I will try to get a hard copy or e-book copy so I can reread some of this book and actually remember the names. The performance was excellent.

Story
In the title story of Souvankham Thammavongsa's debut collection, a young girl brings a book home from school and asks her father to help her pronounce a tricky word, a simple exchange with unforgettable consequences. Thammavongsa is a master at homing in on moments like this—moments of exposure, dislocation, and messy feeling that push us right up against the limits of language.

A truly delightful book

These short stories are very well written and so different from any thing else I have read. I was given short vivid insights into what living as an immigrant from Laos in this country was like. I enjoyed the book very much.

Story
Bayr of Saylok, bastard son of a powerful and jealous chieftain, is haunted by the curse once leveled by his dying mother. Bartered, abandoned, and rarely loved, she plagued the land with her words: From this day forward, there will be no daughters in Saylok. Raised among the Keepers at Temple Hill, Bayr is gifted with inhuman strength. But he’s also blessed with an all-too-human heart that beats with one purpose: to protect Alba, the first girl child born in nearly two decades and the salvation for a country at risk.

Satisfying fantasy and love story

I normally only listen to audible books when I am doing something useful (dishes, laundry, exercises etc) but at the end of this book I had to just stop everything and listen. The author creates a believable world with memorable and likable heroes and heroines, I highly recommend it.
