Solid Characters and Plot But Dwindles As it Ends

I enjoy the characters and the world built, the plot starts strong and has good qualities, but the apex of it all is just a little anticlimactic. Good followup to the first book, but the first story plot apex leaves a bigger impression.

Really enjoyed reading the book after watching the series. For the most part the series followed the book surprisingly close. Where changes were made they were quite subtle. The book helps to give more insight into how the characters think and the motivation behind their decisions.

Good Story not so Good Ending

I enjoyed the story, there is a lot going on in here and a lot of additional backstories. The same kind of creative imagination I'm used to jumping into from the other Black Company books. There is a noticeable absence of first hand accounts of the battles, but I personally did not need that to enjoy the book. I enjoyed all the new characters introduced. My only gripe is the choice the author made at the end of the story, which I dont want to spoil the ending so I won't spell it out. I understand that he was trying to shoehorn this in between the other books, but I felt that he went a little overboard with the manner that he did it. Overall, I still like the book, and think it is worth reading if ur a Black Company fan.

The level of creativity is unmatched! The mix of human element story lines personality traits, political intrigue, AI struggle for subversion and domination of humanity, and the time shift accents in the over all plot is just amazing. If you haven't read this series, do yourself a favor. If you're a SciFi fan, this is a must! I read it both on Kindle and listened in audible, but I got to where I enjoyed the narration so much I would just wait until I could listen again.

The broad array of varying creative elements in this meteoric leap into the far distant future of humanity and digital plane life and space exploration and much, much more, is truly daunting. The author is masterful at pulling several very different plotlines and timelines across many different planets and centuries into one amazing coherent story. My only beef is that book one leaves you on a massive cliffhanger. I much prefer little plots to be tied up for you as you put a book down, not this one! Closing the book means the story is just getting started!

Any book that makes me think about ideas that I have never thought about before I consider to be a strong book. The idea that a person's personality, their character, can be formed by the memories of their past, even if those memories are fake, implanted, is quite an extraordinary concept to me. I have mulled this over in my noggin for awhile now.
