Story
When Robert’s mother dies, his whole world caves in on him. Fatherless, he has no one, and nowhere to go. The royal mage shows him kindness by putting him on the royal guard as a “boot” to keep a roof over his head. Robert’s quick wit and willingness to help others serve him well in the guard. He becomes friends with the king’s second son, Randal, who was placed in the guard by the king to teach him discipline. As he ages, he develops mage abilities but keeps them secret. While on a weekend pass in the city, Robert saves Randal’s life and is rewarded by being made Randal’s liegeman.

The Fake Posh Accent Was Horrible
Reviewed: 01-06-25
The book started out fine. Coming-of-age tale of a poor kid raising his standing in the world with the help of a mysterious benefactor. However, by the mid-point of the book the narrator decided to take on this horrendously-fake posh British accent and never let it go. Add onto that the story devolved into, "my shadows did this, then my shadows did that. Shadow Shadow Shadow, Shadow Shadow Shadow," and it's pretty obvious that this book quickly became a lost cause.
My suggestion would be that the author should buy a thesaurus and the narrator should stick to accents that don't make people want to plug their ears shut with rusty nails. My recommendation? Not worth a credit.

Story
Artemio Volpe must contend with more than simple intrigue. The embers of war burn bright beyond the horizon of the northern steppes, his already estranged family has been hounded by the assassinations, and the shades of the dead pervade his body and mind, granting him their power at a terrible price.

Bait and Switch

I don't generally write reviews, but this book is so annoying I feel I have to. Artemio is not the main character of this book, though all of the summary would lead you to believe he is. Orsina is the main character. Orsina gets the amazing powers; Orsina wins over the girl; Orsina becomes the focal point of the grand finale.
While Orsina is going supernova and saving the day, Artemio is given barely a minute of dialogue to show that he's even involved. What a slap in the face.

Story
Gabriel Delling might call himself a professional con artist, but when walking superstitions start trying to bite his face off, his charm is shockingly unhelpful. It turns out living nightmares almost never appreciate a good joke. Together with a succubus who insists on constantly saving his life, Gabe desperately tries to survive a new reality that suddenly features demons, legends, and a giant locust named Dale - all of whom pretty much hate his guts. And when an ancient horror comes hunting for a spirit locked in his head, Gabe finds himself faced with the excruciating choice between death...or becoming some kind of freaking hero.

Our Illustrious Hero Can't Seem To Not Bleed
Reviewed: 08-18-18
Not every hero is perfect. Hell, not every hero is a hero. This guy, though?
Complete and utter chump.
If he wasn't getting beat to within an inch of his life, he was being a coward. If he wasn't being a coward, he was mustering his courage and paranoia to keep the only people that cared about him at an arm-and-half's length. All while making stupid, apparently uncharacteristic decisions.
The real disappointment of the entire book is that the world, the magic and even a few of the characters were actually quite interesting and engaging. However, that all gets dragged down into the muck by an utterly unlikable main character.
