Story
For over 300 years, a curse has kept the Owens family from love - but all of that is about to change. The novel begins in a library, the best place for a story to be conjured, when beloved aunt Jet Owens hears the deathwatch beetle and knows she has only seven days to live. Jet is not the only one in danger - the curse is already at work. A frantic attempt to save a young man’s life spurs three generations of the Owens women, and one long-lost brother, to use their unusual gifts to break the curse as they travel from Paris to London to the English countryside.

Wow
What a marvelous reminder of how things work and sometimes dysfunction— what a poetic tribute to women’s work and the glory of the senses and the natural world.

Story
When Mona Ramsey married Lord Teddy Roughton to secure his visa—allowing him to remain in San Francisco to fulfill his wildest dreams—she never imagined she would, by age 48, be the sole owner of Easley House, Teddy’s grand, romantic country manor in the UK. She also didn't imagine that she’d need to open the manor’s doors to paying guests to afford the electric bill and repair the leaking roof. Yet somehow she and her young friend Wilfred--whom guests assume is serving as Easley’s charming-but-clumsy butler--and the loopy old gardener Mr. Hargis, are making it work.

This is tender and quirky and refreshing like all his works but somehow in this grand old house the storyteller has woven an especially golden tale.

Wow this book has the marks of a great novel.
it was thrilling to read the historical-- and political details. it was exciting to read about working class protagonists, about their dreams, and the details of garment manufacture. Lydon takes on the ambivalence with aplomb, and holds the tensions well. she explains how difficult it was to be with another woman at these times -- which makes the ending all the more thrilling! Excellent Work.
Thanks!

A Fabulously Gay Christmas Road Trip 🎄

I liked the back and forth between Ally and Morgan, the family history, the geographical details, the zany twists and turns as they navigated their way back home to Devon. I liked the Glasgow details and Claire Story is great at all the accents, she is by far my favorite reader. These characters have dimension and quirks, and Claire Lydon's writing ✍ just gets better and better.
the book just makes me look forward to Christmas for all the right reasons.
