I really enjoy the characters in this series and this first book does a great job introducing the reader to them. The magic system is really cool and easy to understand. Definitely worth the read!

Story
Sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that raised him—the fundamentalist sect that unleashed Armageddon and decimated the world’s population. Desperately, he searches for a place where the cult can’t get their hands on him, or more importantly, on the bioweapon they infected him with. But when cornered by monsters born from the destruction, Benji is rescued by a group of teens from the local Acheson LGBTQ+ Center, affectionately known as the ALC. The ALC’s leader, Nick, is gorgeous, autistic, and a deadly shot, and he knows Benji’s darkest secret.

I felt so represented. Autistic characters, queer characters, and a healthy helping of fighting religious trauma. Everything is so interconnected between the main character's situation with their trauma and accepting their own queerness in the midst of the apocalypse. I will definitely be listening to it again!

Story
It's fall 2007. A well-timed leak has revealed that the US government might have engaged in first contact. Cora Sabino is doing everything she can to avoid the whole mess, since the force driving the controversy is her whistleblower father. Even though Cora hasn't spoken to him in years, his celebrity has caught the attention of the press, the internet, the paparazzi, and the government - and with him in hiding, that attention is on her. She neither knows nor cares whether her father's leaks are a hoax and wants nothing to do with him.

I enjoy characters from vastly different perspectives and cultures attempting to bridge the gap to understanding one another. This book had me really looking forward to the next chance to listen.
