Story
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

It’s a good story
Reviewed: 01-09-23
It does feel like either a prequel or sequel to his book on Bonhoeffer (that is a 5 star book). This is a good book as well, especially when he points to the parallels between the German church and our modern American church. He lays out a lot of the common errors and what we need to do to avoid being misled because of apathy. The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the constant reference to DB, because it makes it feel like Metaxes wanted to write a 2nd volume to the biography already made.

Story
C. T. Studd was one of the Cambridge Seven in the 1800s. These men dedicated their lives to Christian missions work. This bold treatise by Studd encourages Christians to be bold in sharing their faith - to contain inner granite rather than melting chocolate. This is an impassioned look at taking faith seriously in a time when comfort was sought with greater enthusiasm.

Story
As a ministry worker, raising support can be a daunting task. It doesn't have to be intimidating though. It isn't about money or asking people to give. It is about looking to God to provide for you. He has given you a vision for ministry, and now you get to invite others into that vision. Your job is to pray and work hard to discover those whom the Lord has already prepared to invest in you and your ministry. God has done His work. Now it's time for you to do yours.

Great book; Disregard some things
Reviewed: 09-09-22
I liked this book and the overall message and guidance is great! My only reservation is that he name drops or utilizes examples from ministries that aren’t biblically accurate. It bothers me because I don’t want to see more churches that are great at getting people but fail at preaching the full gospel. That said, the author has really changed my mind on gathering support, so for that alone I still recommend this book for every church planter and missionary.

Story
In Rules for Reformers, Douglas Wilson poaches the political craft of radical progressives and applies it to Christian efforts in the current culture war. The result is a spicy blend of combat manual and cultural manifesto. Rules for Reformers is a little bit proclamation of grace, a little bit Art of War, and a little bit analysis of past embarrassments and current cowardice, all mixed together with a bunch of advanced knife-fighting techniques. As motivating as it is provocative, Rules for Reformers is just plain good to hear.

I dont like it
Reviewed: 03-10-20
this book comes off as an attempt to "Christianize" Saul Alinsky's book "Rules for Radicals." While there are bits of truth scattered throughout, it was not what I was expecting. This book failed all of my expectations. Based on the title I expected it to be an application of reformed theology in a modern setting. I don't feel I got that. This book feels more like a secular song being used in church where the singers "church it up" to tickle peoples ears.

Story
As Adolf Hitler and the Nazis seduced a nation, bullied a continent, and attempted to exterminate the Jews of Europe, a small number of dissidents and saboteurs worked to dismantle the Third Reich from the inside. One of these was Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a pastor and author. In this New York Times bestselling biography, Eric Metaxas takes both strands of Bonhoeffer's life—the theologian and the spy—and draws them together to tell a searing story of incredible moral courage in the face of monstrous evil.

This is hands down one of the best biographies ever written of a preacher. It is an encouragement to the believer and the historical accuracy woven throughout is a major plus for history buffs. In addition Mr. Metaxas does a phenomenal job in pointing out Bonhoeffer's dilemma with the church and the failings of church leadership to lay hold of the bible to and grasp the truths therein as their very lives depended on it. Honest in his approach to Bonhoeffer, the author doesn't exalt the man higher than he should be, nor does he approach him with disdain. In truth, I believe this book should not only be read, but studied by layman and preacher alike. So in my opinion, yes get this book!
