Story
More than 15 years after the events of The Handmaid's Tale, the theocratic regime of the Republic of Gilead maintains its grip on power, but there are signs it is beginning to rot from within. At this crucial moment, the lives of three radically different women converge, with potentially explosive results. Two have grown up as part of the first generation to come of age in the new order. The testimonies of these two young women are joined by a third: Aunt Lydia. Her complex past and uncertain future unfold in surprising and pivotal ways.

Story
At the end of the Second World War, Cyril Conroy combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves. The story is told by Cyril’s son Danny, as he and his older sister, the brilliantly acerbic and self-assured Maeve, are exiled from the house where they grew up by their stepmother.

I will be gifting this to my 19 year old daughter who is studying architecture, who was dragged to open houses as a toddler, and whose grand dad and great grand dad where furniture builders and carpenters. I’ve been obsessed with old houses forever. And obsessed with Rehab Addict since show #1. I cried when Nicole said her son said,”Don’t be an asshole,” because it’s my father’s mantra and in my DNA. Sisters from another mister...you go, girl!

Story
In 1948, after surviving World War II by escaping Nazi-occupied France for refugee camps in Switzerland, the author's grandparents, Anna and Armand, bought an old stone house in a remote, picturesque village in the South of France. Five years later, Anna packed her bags and walked out on Armand, taking the typewriter and their children. Aside from one brief encounter, the two never saw or spoke to each other again, never remarried, and never revealed what had divided them forever.

In pitch-perfect voices, Kathryn Stockett creates three extraordinary women whose determination to start a movement of their own forever changes a town, and the way women—mothers, daughters, caregivers, friends—view one another. A deeply moving novel filled with poignancy, humor, and hope, The Help is a timeless and universal story about the lines we abide by, and the ones we don't.

I knew nothing of this book when I rushed to download it for a long road trip. But the high ratings inspired me to buy it. I just finished listening to the first 1/3 of the book and am swept away by the brilliant reading, the rich prose, and characters so real that I feel like I'm somehow in the story. I want to be friends with these women - converse with them - explore and wonder with them. It will take your breath away.

Story
Clare and Henry have known each other since Clare was six and Henry was thirty-six. They were married when Clare was twenty-three and Henry was thirty-one. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself misplaced in time, pulled to moments of emotional gravity from his life, past and future.

Amazing story and audio
Reviewed: 06-03-04
I felt a loss when the story ended. I wanted it to go on forever. The characters become friends that you know you'll sadly never see again. The audio was amazing - so well read (aka acted) that I felt like I was "watching" a play. I hear that they're turning the book into a movie. How will they do it -- the complexity and time travel seems overwhelmingly complicated to put on film. But I'll be first in line to see it.
