The lives of the Barretts, a normal suburban New England family, are torn apart when 14-year-old Marjorie begins to display signs of acute schizophrenia. To her parents' despair, the doctors are unable to stop Marjorie's descent into madness. Went between liking it and hating it
Reviewed: 02-06-25
It’s pretty much your typical possession story except the fun is taken out almost immediately by a skeptical narrator. Like the title says, I started out hating it, then it would grow on me, then I would hate it again. This happens probably three times through out the book and by the end, I ended up hating it again. There are these weird “blog posts” chapters that are completely unnecessary and throw off the whole flow of the story, in my opinion. Those chapters were tough to listen to.
Narrator is tough to listen to as well. Her male voices just don’t come through well and her voice doing the blog post chapters sound like a bad version of a cliched social media girl.
I would pass on this one.

They found the town silent, apparently abandoned. Then they found the first body strangely swollen and still warm. One hundred fifty were dead, 350 missing. But the terror had only begun in the tiny mountain town of Snowfield, California.

Felt like the novelization of a cheesy horror movie
Reviewed: 01-20-25
The beginning of the book is great and I had high hopes but towards the middle and in the end I felt like I was reading the book form of a cheesy horror movie. The cliches were off the charts and it started to become fairly predictable.

One of the best series ever written. I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed listening to books as much as I have with this series. Absolutely amazing and I am a little sad it’s over.

Had to finish the series
Reviewed: 09-20-24
This book felt like it dragged out a bit and was a little difficult to finish for me. I had listened to the other 2 books of the series so I had to listen to this one but I kinda lost interest in book 2. Maybe I’m just not a big fan of sci fi but it was a little too science-y for me. Still good but just not my taste.

Story
This near-future trilogy is the first chance for English-speaking listeners to experience this multiple-award-winning phenomenon from Cixin Liu, China's most beloved science fiction author. In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion - in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy.

I was wondering how this book was going to be after realizing the characters are different and the story jumps through time in big chunks. I was very happy to find out that this book was just as good as the first. It is very different in a way but the story develops more depth and brings everything together in a way I did not foresee. 5 stars and I can’t wait to see how the series wraps up.

Literally 1,000x better than the Netflix series. I couldn’t get through two episodes but knew the premise was something that would be better in book form. I didn’t realize to what degree I was right. The characters have much more depth and the overall story makes so much more sense and adds an enormous amount of context and content. Overall 5 stars!

Story
For centuries, the Vikings have swept out of the Norse countries and fallen on whatever lands they could reach aboard their longships, and few could resist the power of their violent onslaught. They came at first to plunder and then to settle, an encroachment fiercely resisted wherever they went. Such was the case in the southern lands of Ireland. En route to the Viking longphort there, known as Dubh-linn, Thorgrim Night Wolf and Ornolf the Restless stumble across an Irish ship.

The story itself is pretty good and better than what I had expected. Having only read or listened to Viking novels based in England, I really enjoyed a little bit of the different perspective. People complain about the narrator but I didn’t think it was bad at all. Definitely heard worse! Overall, I would say that if you’re a fan of Viking age historical fiction that this is worth a listen. I’ll definitely be continuing the series!

Story
Money's tight and their new home is a fixer-upper. Deep in rural South West England, with an ancient wood at the foot of the garden, Tom and his family are miles from anywhere and anyone familiar. His wife, Fiona, was never convinced that buying the money-pit at auction was a good idea. Not least because the previous owner committed suicide. Though no one can explain why.

New York City in 1978 is a dirty, dangerous place to live - and die. Joey Peacock knows this as well as anybody - he has spent the last forty years as an adolescent vampire, perfecting the routine he now enjoys: womanizing in punk clubs and discotheques, feeding by night, and sleeping by day with others of his kind in the macabre labyrinth under the city's sidewalks.

One of his best!
Reviewed: 05-11-23
If you have read any of Joe Abercrombie’s other books you know what you’re getting into. Violent, vulgar, dark. But at the same time he balances this with comic relief and amazing characters that go through real development, making them come alive throughout the novel. Best Served Cold might be his best example of this yet. The compelling story, along with great characters (you might be familiar with some), real conflict, and great narration makes this one of my favorite books I have listened to or read in a long time. The first half of the novel moves at an incredible pace and keeps you coming back for more. The second half is more of a slow burn but ultimately brings everything together in only a way that Abercrombie is capable of. If you’re a fan of good books, give this one a listen!
