needs editing
Reviewed: 07-06-19
If you listen from chapter 16 to 19 you hear how narration works, how editors have to cut out coughs, oopses, lines spoken twice, gaps where narrator looses his place and has to trace back where he was. Overal very poor editing.
the story itself is not that bad, nothing great or maybe thats just because i'm not sucked in to the story because the poor editing job.

Great, not a fan of how the book ended
Reviewed: 07-11-18
If you liked the first 3 books of this serie i'm sure you will love this one too. Written in the same style of the first 3 and a full 60 hours, what is really amazing. At some parts i feel like the writer could have stepped up the phase of the story a bit and leave out some of the details, those details geve a great depth in the characters but slow down the speed alot. and then at the end it feels like he looked how fat a stack of script he already had and rushed it a little.
now, here is why i did not like the ending, i somehow hoped that this would be used as a platform for other spin offs like corpies. Maybe follow our superpowereds in there first 2 years of training but if you skip ahead 10 years in the future it makes it clear that Drew has no such intentions.

Story
Considered one of the great dystopian novels - alongside Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange and Aldous Huxley's A Brave New World - Ira Levin's frightening glimpse into the future continues to fascinate listeners even 40 years after publication. The story is set in a seemingly perfect global society. Uniformity is the defining feature; there is only one language and all ethnic groups have been eugenically merged into one race called "The Family".

very enjoyable if you like dystopian fiction
Reviewed: 04-28-18
The first few hours reminded me alot of Brave new world and i think the author got some inspiration there. In itself thats not bad since the book is far from a copy. For a book in this genre its light reading, it feels dystopian but on the other hand ppl dont have it that bad.
narration was ok if you overlook a few minor mistakes. I loved the way how he spoke french.

Story
It's the year 2000 and the Silicon Valley city of Sunnyview is abuzz with the possibilities of vast fortunes to be made in the Dot Com boom. But to retired cop Benjamin Stone, who has come to Sunnyview to find his estranged daughter, Jessica, the promise of Sunnyview rings hollow. Benjamin grew up in Sunnyview in the 1950s, when it was a sleepy farming town, and he finds its modern day counterpart strange and weirdly insubstantial. After Jessica turns up dead in a creek bed, apparently murdered, Benjamin follows clues that suggest a conspiracy involving a startup company.

Reviewed: 03-08-18
The story sucks you in and lets you travel along with the main character. At some points i miss the humor of Robert Kroese you can find in his other books, and yes, that humor might be missplaced in this story.
The narration is done very well even if i wonder why there was chosen for a female narrator to tell this from a first person perspective of a 58 year old man.

thank you audible for adjustable speed
Reviewed: 02-08-18
I waited a long time for this book to arive, in the lit rpg genre i get tired of most stories after book 2 or 3 because it tends to be alot more of the same. This story progresses nicely and it stays interesting.
the narration is too slow, so thank you audible for having the option of speeding that up. But I dont want to be all negative here, the different characters are performed well and that way it stays interesting to listen.

I did buy this book after i did listen to John Scalzi's fuzzy nation, where he states that it was a re write of this book. Because i did love that one i thought i had to listen to the original so i could compare them. They are different enough to be 2 different books with alot of similarities.
I was not a fan of the narration of this version, the story itself was ok but i had higher expectations

It has bin 2 years since H. Howeys last work in fiction appeared here, i'm very glad to see anything by this point and i hope its not the last for another 2 years.
I planned to give this book 4 stars like most others until somewhere in the middle i stumble upon a story with a very controversial ending. I have no doubt that many people will dislike it and give this work a low rating because of that. To me this points out that its written to be a great story, not to be liked by the majority of people.
In general i'm not a huge fan of short stories, they tend to be lacking and are mostly second rate stories that are not good enough for a full novel, but with this release i'm wondering why half of this stories are not worked out as full novels, there too good to stay this short.
