Story
Almost all accounts of D-Day are told from the Allied perspective, with the emphasis on how German resistance was overcome on June 6, 1944. But what was it like to be a German soldier in the bunkers and gun emplacements of the Normandy coast, facing the onslaught of the mightiest seaborne invasion in history? What motivated the German defenders, what were their thought processes - and how did they fight from one strong point to another, among the dunes and fields, on that first cataclysmic day?

A great account from German eyes!
Reviewed: 11-10-23
I have seen and read so many accounts of D-Day through the allied perspective, and often wondered what it was like being on the other side. This book illustrates that exact thing from the POV of a few German soldiers on various beaches throughout Normandy. I wish there were more accounts in the book, which is the only negative I have to say. Overall, a great book!

Robert does a fantastic job at narrating. Listening to the book was like he was sitting next to you on a bar stool sharing stories. The stories were pack full of detail, emotion, and entertainment. I really enjoyed this book and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in the military, the GWOT, or military history.

Story
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

I, like the author, am one of millions of Americans that claim Irish heritage. As a history buff, the troubles, particularly the IRA has always interested me. The author does a great job of laying out the players, the sociopolitical environment, and the various activities of the IRA all while following the murder of Jean McConville. As a criminal investigator, this book had me hooked and searching for clues right along with the author. Hopefully, one day the family will receive closure.

The Iran hostage crisis was a watershed moment in American history. It was America's first showdown with Islamic fundamentalism, a confrontation at the forefront of American policy to this day. It was also a powerful dramatic story that captivated the American people, launched yellow-ribbon campaigns, made celebrities of the hostage's families, and crippled the reelection campaign of President Jimmy Carter.

I really enjoyed this book. I got the hardcover version in high school, but wanted to listen to it as I drove. Mark does a great job of seamlessly weaving together the accounts of the hostages. His narration is a perfect addition to an already great book. There was talks of NatGeo/Fox 21 Television writing a documentary off this book. I hope that’s still the case.

I didn’t read close enough…not about pigs.
Reviewed: 12-21-22
I will admit that I didn’t read the description of the book close enough. I am a fan of Joel’s books and I thought this would be about raising pigs. Along the lines of his pastured poultry profit book which I loved. This book has nothing to do with pigs and everything about Joel’s philosophy on life, farming, and Christianity. It is still a fine book, just not what I was interested in.

Story
The relationship between Freddie Mercury and Jim Hutton evolved over several months in 1984 and 1985. Even when they first slept together, Hutton had no idea who Mercury was, and, when the star told him his name, it meant nothing to him. Hutton worked as a barber at the Savoy Hotel and retained his job and his lodgings in Sutton, Surrey, for two years after moving in with Mercury. He was never fully assimilated into Mercury's jet-setting lifestyle, but, from 1985 until Mercury's death in 1991, he was closer to him than anyone and knew all Mercury's closest friends.

In the 1980s, Elton John saw friend after friend, loved one after loved one, perish needlessly from AIDS. In the midst of the plague, he befriended Ryan White, a young Indiana boy ostracized by his town and his school because of the HIV infection he had contracted from a blood transfusion. Ryan's inspiring life and devastating death led Elton to two realizations: His own life was a mess. And he had to do something to help stop the AIDS crisis. Since then, Elton has dedicated himself to overcoming the plague.

After Eric Davis spent over 16 years in the military, including a decade in the SEAL teams, his family was more than used to his absence on deployments and secret missions that could obscure his whereabouts for months at a time. Without a father figure in his own life since the age of 15, Eric was desperate to maintain the bonds he'd fought so hard to forge when his children were young - particularly with his son, Jason, because he knew how difficult it was to face the challenge of becoming a man on one's own.

A “must read” for students of history and foreign policy
Reviewed: 12-02-22
In full disclosure, I was gifted a copy of this book by the author. I do a lot of traveling for work, so I also purchased a copy through Audible so I could listen while I drove. I am so glad that I did! The author does a wonderful job of keeping the listeners attention with the narration. He also does a great job at providing fair and balanced insight about his time with the Trump administration. The author concisely, but strategically, discusses the major theaters of the world that impact the lives of many, if not all, Americans. Like the author, I am an avid student of history and foreign policy, despite a career in law enforcement. This book is a must read, or listen, for anyone interested in these subjects. Thank you, H.R. McMaster, Jr.
