Story
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.

I picked this book because I was in the mood for something light and silly. Instead, I read something light and profound. This book has had such an impact on me that I'm reluctant to say much about for fear of trivializing it. I'll just say, instead, that this is one of the best books I've read. I'm shocked I had never heard of it.

"That Others May Live" is a mantra that defines the fearless men of Alaska's 212th Pararescue Unit, the PJs, one of the most elite military forces on the planet. Whether they are rescuing citizens injured and freezing in the Alaskan wilderness or saving wounded Rangers and SEALs in blazing firefights at war, the PJs are the least known and most highly trained of America's warriors. Never Quit is the true story of how Jimmy Settle, an Alaskan shoe-store clerk, became a Special Forces Operator and war hero.

Stunning Detailed Account
Reviewed: 07-25-21
I, like many, am fascinated by the pivotal event that occurred at Gettysburg in 1863. A series of battles that effected the military, political, and cultural future of the war and this country. I have read many books on Gettysburg and purchased this one with hesitation. I expected a repetition of what I had already new. I was wrong. Some authors provide detailed factual accounts. Others comment on what occurred. Still others are stylish writers. Rarely does an author combine all three in one book. Sears has in this book. It earns my highest recommendation.

From Neil Sheehan, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic A Bright Shining Lie, comes this long-awaited, magnificent epic. Here is the never-before-told story of the nuclear arms race that changed history - and of the visionary American Air Force officer Bernard Schriever, who led the high-stakes effort. A Fiery Peace in a Cold War is a masterly work about Schriever’s quests to prevent the Soviet Union from acquiring nuclear superiority, to penetrate and exploit space for America, and to build the first weapons meant to deter an atomic holocaust.

One More Paean to the Greatest Generation
Reviewed: 02-13-21
To begin, a great book, great story, greatly performed. It will appeal to those interested in the history of science, technology, Cold War America, USAF history, or military history in general. It's subject is the advance of technology in perilous times, but the author has served us well by presenting it in a way that is readily understandable without undermining our our appreciation of the difficulty of the task accomplished by the men described. It was especially appreciated that, in addition to describing the technological contributions of the men in the book, he described their earlier WWII combat contributions. It should never be lost on posterity that this same generation served and prevailed in two wars, one hot and one cold. The fact that, through their efforts, we won the Cold War and avoided Armageddon is proof enough that Peace was their Profession. Thank you, Neil Sheehan and thank you, Bernard Schriever.

In 1995, Arkady Babchenko was an 18-year-old law student in Moscow when he was drafted into the Russian army and sent to Chechnya. It was the beginning of a torturous journey from naïve conscript to hardened soldier that took Babchenko from the front lines of the first Chechen War in 1995 to the second in 1999. He fought in major cities and tiny hamlets, from the bombed-out streets of Grozny to anonymous mountain villages.

Like No Other War Story
Reviewed: 02-03-21
I've read many war books, many from just about every war. This book is unlike any of the others, which is why you must read it. It's a book about an army at war - with itself. It's a story about the unmitigated brutality that Russian soldiers inflict on each other and everyone is in on it, one way or the other, from the lowest private up to the generals. It's a story about an army of dissolute men who despite their misery live to form a bond.

This book is a diamond in every way. The subject. The story. The writing. The narration. The everything. This story is the perfect antidote for our modern era populated by conniving duplicitous politicians, press and business. In an era when no one has any values and no one can be trusted, it's reassuring to know that once someone like William Marshall lived. Many thanks to Thomas Asbridge for writing this book. It was a flawless immersive experience.

Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Phenomenal Synopsis of the Troubles
Reviewed: 03-14-20
I was a child in 70s and heard TV news reports of the conflict, shootings and bombings, in Northern Ireland. I heard Paul McCartney's song. I've always wanted a concise history to introduce me to that conflict, but couldn't find one, especially an audio version which is all I have time for anymore. This turned out to be that book. I much appreciate that the author told his story through the experience of its participants, which breathed life into his historical narrative. The narrator was flawless, only expressing flashes of passion was when the narrative required it. I could not reccomend this book more highly.

General Stonewall Jackson was like no one anyone had ever seen. In April of 1862 he was merely another Confederate general with only a single battle credential in an army fighting in what seemed to be a losing cause. By middle June he had engineered perhaps the greatest military campaign in American history and was one of the most famous men in the Western World. He had given the Confederate cause what it had recently lacked: hope.

Story
They called him Mickey Free. His kidnapping started the longest war in American history, and both sides - the Apaches and the white invaders - blamed him for it. A mixed-blood warrior who moved uneasily between the worlds of the Apaches and the American soldiers, he was never trusted by either but desperately needed by both. He was the only man Geronimo ever feared. He played a pivotal role in this long war for the desert Southwest from its beginning in 1861 until its end in 1890 with his pursuit of the renegade scout Apache Kid.
