Chief Inspector Brian Leslie, a respected colleague of Ian Rutledge’s, is sent to Avebury, a village set inside a great prehistoric stone circle not far from Stonehenge. A young woman has been murdered next to a mysterious, hooded, figure-like stone, but no one recognizes her - or admits to it. And how did she get there? Despite a thorough investigation, it appears that her killer has simply vanished.

My favorite author, character and narrator
Reviewed: 04-24-20
Simon Prebble continues to do an outstanding job of bringing a post-WW1- feel to his narration of the ongoing life and investigation of Inspector Rutledge. It is easy to walk along side him as he investigates this latest case with a great twist at the end. I hope there are many more stories to come....

Story
An astonishing tip from a grateful ex-convict seems implausible - but Inspector Ian Rutledge is intrigued and brings it to his superior at Scotland Yard. Alan Barrington, who has evaded capture for 10 years, is the suspect in an appalling murder during Black Ascot, the famous 1910 royal horse race honoring the late King Edward VII. His disappearance began a manhunt that consumed Britain for a decade. Now, it appears that Barrington has returned to England, giving the Yard a last chance to retrieve its reputation and see justice done.

Might be the best Rutledge yet!

I'm a raving fan of the Inspector Rutledge series... there hasn't been single book that I haven't loved. As always, the scene is carefully set in The Black Ascot and then the uncovering of the mystery skillfully woven with interesting characters - keeping us going until the very end. Simon Prebble does his usual excellent job of bringing the characters to life and giving Rutledge the expected gentlemanly demeanor expected of the era and his background. I look forward to many more in the series - and to more Bess Crawford mysteries too! I do wonder if they will ever meet in one of the books?!

Interesting story line based on a truth
Reviewed: 09-04-18
Overall very interesting - based on some legacy truths of WW1 as are all the novels. The only critique I have would be that it is obvious that the narrator is not from the UK despite a good accent overall! The pronunciation of some words is clearly pulled from US English not UK English - and I would expect better if the publisher is going to select a non-UK person to narrate as all of this could have been prevented - it does end up being annoying! For example: radiator should be pronounced RAY-diator; clerk should be clArk, etc. Other than than, overall well narrated.

Story
A rare stamp and a corpse are discovered in Bath within hours of each other. As he investigates, Inspector Peter Diamond discovers that both the person who found the stamp and the victim belong to the Bloodhounds, an elite group of mystery lovers, who now urge Diamond to bring the murderer to justice. But there's a hitch: the body lies inside a padlocked houseboat and the only key is in the pocket of a man with an airtight alibi.

Simply awful narration - it spoils the story!

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
The narrator is terrible! The series is fantastic - one of my favorite authors and choices from Audible - but this narrator fails to read it well at all. It's a shame - I downloaded two of the series recently to find them both narrated by the same person and I cannot even get to chapter 3 it's so bad. I am sure the story is good - I just can't stand to listen!
