Story
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Like a beautiful painting, I wanted to jump in
Reviewed: 10-17-24
Like a beautiful painting, I wanted to jump in and hug some of the characters. I also cried, became angry - wanting to slap some of those people he wrote about, but most of all I was dumbfounded that these events didn't take place in the 1800's, no these events took place during my lifetime. This fact brings tears to my eyes.

Story
Explore the power of the underdog in Malcolm Gladwell's dazzling examination of success, motivation, and the role of adversity in shaping our lives, from the best-selling author of The Bomber Mafia. Three thousand years ago on a battlefield in ancient Palestine, a shepherd boy felled a mighty warrior with nothing more than a stone and a sling, and ever since then the names of David and Goliath have stood for battles between underdogs and giants. David's victory was improbable and miraculous. He shouldn't have won. Or should he have?

I enjoyed the entire book and its' anecdotal stories. I especially liked when the author referred back to the Bible while reading. It may seem that it is heavy on religion, but it is not. Through real life stories, it mentions strategies that should be used when battling today's "Goliath." I did not give it a perfect score because I personally would have liked for the author to link his stories to the Bible more often and use more biblical stories, at least a few more. Otherwise, it is a great book and I plan to read it again in a couple of years.

Story
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

I liked every single aspect of the book and the reader's voice as well. It had all the characteristics of a great story: laughter, drama, sadness, suspense, righteous anger, etc..., I plan to read it again in the future and pass it on to my son. There are many life lessons that can be learned from this book.
