The story was ok but I couldn't get past the narrator ready each sentence like she was checking off a grocery list. There was no fluidity to the narration. She made each sentence feel like it was standing alone from the rest.

Story
They say your first kiss should be earned. Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky. They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred. Mine were broken before we left church. They say your heart only beats for one man. Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end. I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit. Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

18th or 21st Century Romance....?
Reviewed: 02-08-19
This novel got old really quick. If you've read a Jude Deveraux or Lauren Willig novel, chances are you've heard this story before (many times) without a new spin....ok ok a new century is the only spin you'll get with this book. Sometimes, I would forget that the story is set in modern day (and I mean 2000's) with the old-fashioned way these families behave. It's the story of a NAIVE, sheltered, 19-year old girl who's "sold" to an older, rich, up and coming politician who's out for revenge against the Chicago Mafia led by the girl's father.
It's as if the author couldn't make up their mind on the kind of story they wanted to tell. It feels like Shen wanted to have an old romance story told soft and delicately and then you're reminded you're in a modern time with the vulgar, sexual terms that are used.
I didn't care for the female narrator; especially the voice she gave the male love interest. She, too, made the story FEEL like it was set in the 18th century (if that makes sense); she and her uninspired Italian accent. The male narrator's interpretation for me, was more spot on. At times, it seemed they were telling 2 different stories. Plus, the terminology used- If I had a nickel for every time the terms "fiance, future wife, future husband, bride-to-be, my husband, my wife, YOUR FATHER" were used, I'd be rich. *ROLLS EYES* Overused and unnecessary.
Many times I had to stop, shake my head and yell, "WHO TALKS LIKE THIS ANYMORE!?!?!" and Can you say virginal, bloody bed sheets on the wedding night? Who does THAT anymore?
MEH!

Story
Former piano prodigy Nastya Kashnikov wants two things: to get through high school without anyone learning about her past and to make the boy who took everything from her - her identity, her spirit, her will to live - pay. Josh Bennett’s story is no secret: Every person he loves has been taken from his life until, at 17 years old, there is no one left. Now all he wants is be left alone and people allow it because when your name is synonymous with death, everyone tends to give you your space.
Everyone except Nastya, the mysterious new girl at school who starts showing up and won’t go away until she’s insinuated herself into every aspect of his life.

Maud Heighton came to Lafond's famous Academie to paint, and to flee the constraints of her small English town. It took all her courage to escape, but Paris, she quickly realizes, is no place for a light purse. While her fellow students enjoy the dazzling decadence of the Belle Epoque, Maud slips into poverty. Quietly starving, and dreading another cold Paris winter, Maud is hired by Christian Morel as companion to his beautiful, young sister, Sylvie. But Sylvie, Maud discovers, is not quite the darling she seems.

The narrator has a lovley voice and is a great but I was distracted by constantly hearing her swallow and smack her mouth. I assume this is an editing issue. The story was decent. Between chapters though, there are random descriptions of paitings, I imagine these are in the book....BUT random for an audiobook. I LOVE and appreciate art but this was out of nowhere and for me, disrupts the flow of the book/story.
