Story
On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston Harbor: Fort Sumter.

Another great book by Eric Larsen. Suggest reading rather than listening. Will Patton is HORRIBLE. Even “all rights reserved” said with breathless over-dramatization. And his imitation of the woman’s voice is cartoonish. Just awful.

Story
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

This book is both a history of leadership (and lack therof) in Washington from Reagan. It chronicles all of the many public health emergencies that fell into the lap of Tony Fauci: HIV/AIDS, Ebola, H1N1, SARS, bird flu, bioterrorism, and Covid.
We are indebted to Dr. Fauci for his tenacity, and determination to address these challenges and to his family for sharing him with us.

Fantastic. I learned a LOT. Really interesting info and great anecdotes. If you support Trump, you’re risking your children’s office. If you don’t read anything else, read the Trump chapter.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 dawned what Francis Fukuyama called “The End of History.” Three decades later, Jim Sciutto said on CNN’s air as the Ukraine war began, that we are living in a “1939 moment.” History never ended—it barely paused—and the global order as we have known it is now gone. Great powers are reinvigorated and determined to assert dominance on the world stage. And as it escalates, this new order will affect everyone across the globe.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat knows her strongmen! The parallels between Mussolini, Hitler, Putin, Gaddafi and a singular American leader (Donald Trump) make it all too clear why this man can NEVER be President again.
The only thing I didn’t like about this audiobook was the reader. Just AWFUL. She sounds like an old-style telephone operator, mispronounces names and words, and takes away from the intellect of the book.

Other than her personal background, there’s not much to learn from this book. Her childhood was pretty screwed up, and it’s impressive how far she got in Washinfton on her own initiative and with no real connections.
She def throws her dad under the bus, and he def deserves it. There is much to admire about her bravery before the Jan 6 committee.
Nevertheless, I was left wondering why someone who eagerly read cover-to-cover a book about Alexander Butterfield couldn’t have read a book about Donald Trump before going to work for him. She talks about having “adored” Trump. WTH?!?
