beautifully written poignant story of a large group of creative friends. it wasnt until i was nearing the end that I realized Waterhouse might be compared favorably to Dickins. there are long passages in the middle that were so sad, I wanted to cry, the characters so realistic that I loved many of them. I'll have to listen to this 10 hour epic again soon.

Would you listen to Doctor Who and the Visitation again? Why?

The Doctor and his companions set down in the English countryside during the summer of 1666, a time of rampant fears of the plague. I enjoyed Mr. Waterhouse's reading of this tale, especially his entertaining impersonations of various characters, such as Adric & Richard Mace.

What about Matthew Waterhouse’s performance did you like?

Soothing voice. His own enjoyment of the program is contagious.

Any additional comments?

In a word, the audio of Four to Doomsday is "heartwarming." It's an interesting adventure, pretty much exactly like the television serial from which it was adapted, very slightly extended, and it all ends with the characters snugly back in the TARDIS.

Would you listen to Fates, Flowers again? Why?

I would listen to this again because it is funny and compelling. In fact, I have listened to it several times already.

What other book might you compare Fates, Flowers to and why?

I don't know that I can compare it to anything else I've read. Woman sees young stud from her window -- like a weed sprouting from a crack in the sidewalk. What might they have in common?

Which scene was your favorite?

I particularly enjoyed the opening scenes of this novel. Will they or won't they get together? It's arresting from the get-go.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

An unlikely, wacky love story!

Any additional comments?

Everything is not quite as it seems. Some things in life are funny, but much of it can be quite horrible. This was a fun but thought provoking novel. A writer usually reads his own work well, so that was no surprise. When that writer is a brilliant intellectual and also a fine actor who knows all the characters intimately and performs them flawlessly, then the listener is the beneficiary of a masterful performance. This story has haunted me for weeks -- in a good way.

Exciting novelization of a 1980 story

What did you like best about this story?

This new recording of the 1982 novel is an in-depth dramatization of the four-episode story Full Circle which aired in 1980 begins with exciting, explosive scenes eloquently written and elegantly performed. The sound effects and music are stunning.

What about John Leeson and Matthew Waterhouse ’s performance did you like?

The voices are excellent. I was particularly impressed that Waterhouse could voice four people in a conversation and the sound design was so carefully done that the listener could instantly discern which character was speaking each time from the first word in the sentence because of where the voice was coming from. It sounded as if multiple actors were all standing and moving about in front of me. Add to that that the voices/accents/dialects all varied. Waterhouse is a major talent.

Any additional comments?

The depth of the four-hour unabridged novel, with its allegory and allusion to religions and evolution, made for a much richer experience than the 90-minute TV story arc. I was amazed.

Any additional comments?

Though her first novel, this is an interesting sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. Scout is grown up and facing some uncomfortable problems with race relations in her home town. But knowing and loving the characters from To Kill a Mockingbird makes this all more palatable. There are some wonderful flashbacks to Scout's idyllic childhood that really shine.

What did you love best about Last Dance at the Savoy?

Beautiful actress/author Kathryn Leigh Scott was a loving and energetic caregiver to her dying husband. We can only hope to have someone half as patient and caring with us in our final days.

Any additional comments?

The chronicle of this intensely personal, yet ultimately universal, journey for Kathryn and her late husband is moving, well written, and well performed by the author. I'm extremely grateful that she memorialized this time in their lives.

Where does Sugar rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Very top

What did you like best about this story?

The thing I liked most was the diversity of the four stories in this collection

What does Matthew Waterhouse bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

The author is a good actor and displays depth and nuance in multiple characters. The various characterizations and accents display an exciting talent.

Any additional comments?

The thing that surprised me most about this collection is that I've found myself thinking about these hilarious and sad stories for weeks afterward, haunted by them and compelled alternatively to reread passages and relisten to the audios time and again. The tales are entertaining on the surface level as well as fine literature for the thinking person. They're even better the second and third time around. The unabridged Audible version of this collection is most enjoyable, with Waterhouse giving pitch perfect voice to the multiple characters. It is highly recommended. I have not read such a fun, entertaining and fulfilling work in 30 years.
