Almost nothing in this book is about the MC. This is the story of Axel, Heidi, and Murphy. While I have thoroughly enjoyed the previous storylines and narration of previous books in the series, this one was a little disappointing by comparison. Female narration was much more nasal than previous installments and male narration was just not nearly as good. I think they may have been aiming for different, younger voices. Maybe I was hoping for too much after having enjoyed the previous books — this one fell flat...

And maybe I’ll try again, but after a half-dozen starts, I just could not get past the first hour of this story. Please note: The Hollows is one of my all-time favorite series ever; maybe my expectations were just too high...

I discovered Brenda Rothert through Audible’s “Romance Package.” This is a 2-2 winner - Come Closer was the first book I read. Her characters are likable and the storyline grabbed my attention and held it throughout the book, from beginning to end. Dual narration by Lee Smith and Kristen Leigh turns this book into a good performance. Definitely credit-worthy!

WARNING: CLIFFHANGER!! I wouldn’t write this review immediately after finishing this book because I feared my review and rating would be unfair. Lauren Blakely is among several authors I’ve recently discovered, and I plan to read every one of her books available on Audible. BUT...
1. This one’s a cliffhanger. I enjoy reading series. One criterion of a series is: each book should contain a complete story. Sure, the next book can pick up right where the previous book ends, but the previous book SHOULD have an ending. It leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when I feel forced (duped!) into spending an additional credit to see how the story I am currently reading ends. I refuse to knowingly spend a credit or more than a bargain-deal on a cliffy. I’ll will pass even when it’s a bargain-deal if the next book isn’t available.
2. It’s short! 6 hours and 9 minutes short. Alone, this wouldn’t be worth mentioning — if it weren’t part of the avalanche of, what? marketing? authors’ instructions? a new ‘art-form’ of writing? who makes these decisions that leave me feeling as though I wear a sign proclaiming, “I’m stoopid! Take advantage of me!”
3. Every single book in this series is short. The range is from 2 hours and 19 minutes (yes, seriously!) to 6 hours and change.
4. There are eight books in this series; Audible currently has four. Granted, the unavailable books are presumably short (oh, the irony! 🤣) in-betweeners e.g. books 0.5, 3.25, 3.4, 3.75 are unavailable.

I am sure I could continue with one or two more things that upset me about this book, but I’m running out of steam lol. I also want to mention why I believe it’s a 4-star worthy book:

Lauren Blakely’s writing rocks. This book has a fun, action-suspense theme. I am enjoying “getting to know” the characters and appreciate the good-natured bantering among them. I know something/someone dark is lurking in the shadows, and with Josh Goodman performing, I feel as if I am a fly on the wall, looking back and forth at the characters when they’re talking. Josh Goodman doesn’t read to you or at you; he creates a live performance. I’m beginning to get spoiled with so many good Audible books containing excellent talent and dual narration, yet JG still delivers ... even with the female characters.

No Lauren Blakely review would be complete without mentioning its h-h-hottness. Night After Night will scorch your ears! Sexy-time in this book easily rates a full, fat five stars! Er, um...you know...if you’re into that sort of thing <wink>

And finally, Audible’s (relatively) new Romance Package kept me from losing my mind over the avalanche of peeves! Lauren Blakely’s books are currently featured in the package, which went a long way soothing the sting of the peeves. I’m beyond thrilled with the Romance Package! Sorry for the massive-missive review 🤔 I hope it helped you to decide that the book is not worth a credit (you will end up spending at least two credits)... but(!) you can try the Romance Package for 30 days without obligation. If you do, I bet you’ll want to keep it! Enjoy your next read — whatever it is! ~•~ karen

Amazing story with terrific characters. I’ve seen reviews comparing this series to “Twilight,” but it’s so much better. I would honor this series to be compared to my all-time favorite series: The Hollows, by Kim Harrison.

Audible, please release the remaining books in this wonderful series, and keep Kitty Bang!

Audible’s Romance Package is fan-freakin’-tastic! I love being able to explore new-to-me authors and short novellas without feeling “invested.” Maybe I just wasn’t in the right mood to enjoy this book. I’ll give it another try and update this review at that time. This review isn’t as much for the book as it is for Audible’s genius, offering all-you-can read with plenty of well-loved authors. No, you don’t get to keep the books, which is fine for me because it is extremely rare for me to read a book more than once. The only negative about the Romance Package is the lack of ability to track which books I’ve read. Hopefully, leaving a review will take care of that. I wouldn’t purchase or spend a credit on this book, but I’ll definitely give it another try as long as it remains in this program. This, along with the new channels that offer a super wide variety of listening material, including several full-length audiobooks, keeps Audible head and shoulders above any competitors they might have! Audible! My Number One guilty pleasure!

I try to avoid the shorter length books because, well, I’m one of those frugal (cheap!) people who wants to feel I’m getting my money’s worth. Audible’s Romance Package has helped me to relax on that front, and I would have otherwise missed out on this terrific, feel-good, hot read! The narrators are excellent, breathing life into the very likable main characters whose conversations made me feel as though I were sitting right next to them. I smiled, I worried, I rooted and cheered for the characters. After listening to the last epilogue, I felt satisfied, and happy. Really, what greater gift can a book give?

I usually love Lexi Blake as well as the 1001 novellas. I tried many times to give this a listen, but my thoughts drifted, or I fell asleep; the story just never grabbed me the way the others do. Narration is excellent, and I’m sure the story probably picks up, but I can’t seem to find the oomph to get past the third hour.
