Story
In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up. This is the shocking true story of an American dream that turned into a nightmare beyond imagining for the Lutz family, who were forced to flee their new home in terror.

Was alright

Honestly the only thing that made this frightening to me was the idea that all of this may have happened to an unfortunate family. The fact that these were real people is the only thing that allowed me to enjoy this.

The hills of Western Massachusetts contain dark and terrible secrets. Strange families keep to themselves and practice rites of ancient and unspeakable black magic. These dreadful and unholy rituals give birth to a monstrosity beyond imagination, a monstrosity that threatens mankind itself!

Good story with a performance that leaves a lot to be desired.

I feel that a lot of what brought the story down for me was the performance. The performance was in no was bad, but rather not for me. I found myself getting distracted and losing interest in a story that I would otherwise fall deeply enveloped in. I hope others enjoy this rendition of the classic more than I did.

Lacking, Disappointing, Not Developed

The story was good but the narrator dragged it down for me.

The story, for the most part, was engaging and had a mystery that felt satisfying as everything unfolded. The strongest aspect of the story for me was the character interactions. Though I enjoyed the story, the narrator was very disappointing. Towards the beginning, the narrators voice felt as though it was intentionally calm to match the tone of the book but as things escalated, the tone never shifted or changed. When characters were actively shouting or panicking, her voice was still far too soothing and calm. It was especially jarring during the climax.

Story
Mystery Bookshop owner Ellery Page and Police Chief Jack Carson are diving for the legendary sunken pirate galleon Blood Red Rose when they discover an old-fashioned diver's suit, water-damaged and encrusted with barnacles. Further examination reveals the 19th-century suit contains a 21st-century body. Who is the mysterious diver? No one seems to be missing from the quaint and cozy town of Pirate's Cove. Was he really diving for pirate's gold? And if not, what exactly did he do to earn that bullet hole in his skull?

Good but not for me
Reviewed: 03-07-22
Nothing really stood out as amazing to me throughout the book. I will say there is a lot to enjoy. It’s a pleasant mystery that comes together quite nicely by the end. Sadly I had very little attachment to the overall story and plot. The moments I enjoyed the most were the simple interactions between the main character, Jack, and Nora. Their personalities clicked well for me but not much else did. That could just be personal and I honestly would recommend this if you have nothing else to listen to to kill some time.
