Not One of Kearsley's Best
Reviewed: 12-22-24
I have read many of Suzanna Kearsley's books and enjoyed every one until this one. This does not measure up to her usual meaty characters and story line. Perhaps I'm just done with reading about Jacobean history, but I found these characters one dimensional and the story watered down. The heroine, for all the proclamations that she was hoping for adventure in this earlier era, was a not a woman, but rather a girl without much complexity, heading straight into a predictable romance. This book is a cozy, time shifting, romance, and that's about all. No surprises. For a far better example of what Kearsely is capable of in the time shifting genre, read "Mariana". Wonderful. If this is your first by this author, don't let it stop you. Firebird and Winter Sea and so many more are also excellent! The narration in this listen is too girlish for my taste, adding to what seems to me to be a vapid portrayal of the lead female character.

Story
In 1919 England, in the shadow of The Great War, many look to the spirit world for answers. But it will take an all-too-earthbound intrigue to draw in the discerning heroine of Anna Lee Huber's latest mystery. It's not that Verity Kent doesn't sympathize with those eager to make contact with lost loved ones. After all, she once believed herself a war widow. But now that she's discovered Sidney is very much alive, Verity is having enough trouble connecting with her estranged husband, never mind the dead. Still, at a friend's behest, Verity attends a seance.

Good mystery story that keeps you guessing til the end. Good characters that could use a bit more development but still engaging. The sing-song narration was like fingernails on a blackboard. ): It's a testament to the good story that I was able to finish it. Will read, NOT listen to, the rest of the series.

Story
A posthumous recipient of the World Fantasy Award for Lifetime Achievement, Marion Zimmer Bradley reinvented - and rejuvenated - the King Arthur mythos with her extraordinary Mists of Avalon series. In this epic work, Bradley follows the arc of the timeless tale from the perspective of its previously marginalized female characters: Celtic priestess Morgaine, Gwenhwyfar, and High Priestess Viviane.

A Masterpiece
Reviewed: 07-30-24
The Arthurian story is the tale of the shift in western consciousness from reincarnation/ earth and goddess based spirituality to one incarnation/Heaven/One God Christian orientation. It was a profound shift, one that took place over hundreds of years. In the way of a masterful story teller, Bradley gives us all the characters in the legend in beautiful, full color complexity set in the rich history and politics of post Roman Britain, and reminds those of us who feel a connection with the story, that we are natural heirs to an elemental spirituality. I read it with wonder in 1984, and 40 Yeats later, have just finished listening to and reading it again. This time with an even deeper appreciation of this phenomenal an inexpressibly beautiful accomplishment of storytelling genius.

Story
Thirty miles off the coast of San Francisco lie the Farallon Islands, known to sailors as the Devil’s Teeth. Despite their fearsome reputation, their remote nature appeals to young Lucy Riley, who in 1859 seeks a new start as a teacher to the lighthouse keepers’ children. But Lucy brings treacherous secrets with her, including a name that isn’t hers and a past she can’t escape. On the island, she meets Will Sisson, a mysterious man who seems to recognize her name—but not her face. Wary of Will at first, Lucy slowly starts to trust him.

Great use of a gorgeous location

A pretty good story in the beautiful Farallon Islands. Good use of historical and geographical facts. Pretty good character development. Tight, fairly suspenseful and interesting plot. Doesn't resolve central plot point of mother's and perhaps daughter's supernatural abilities. Awful narrator. Never strayed from her breathy, extreme delivery. Almost a deal killer. The plot kept me to the end. Well almost the end. I bailed on the final soliloquy on the meaning of life. Geeze, come on!

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Harry tell the story of his life to date. He did a great job of conveying what it means to be a fairly regular guy trying to navigate such a pressurized and unnatural existence. Good on you Harry! And good on you and Megan for fighting for your family's freedom. Toasting you all from Oregon.

Story
Jamie Fraser knows from his time-traveling wife Claire that, no matter how unlikely it seems, America will win the Revolutionary War. But that truth offers little solace, since Jamie realizes he might find himself pointing a weapon directly at his own son - a young officer in the British army. And Jamie isn't the only one with a tormented soul - for Claire may know who wins the conflict, but she certainly doesn't know whether or not her beloved Jamie survives.

Story
The four fires in this story are passion, religion, warfare, and fire itself. While there are many more fires that drive the human spirit, love being perhaps the brightest flame of all, it is these four that have moulded us most as Australian people. The four fires give us our sense of place and, for better or for worse, shape our national character.

The story opens with the apparently accidental drowning of a sixth form student in the Norfolk countryside. As a matter of routine, or so it seems, the case passes across the desk of Detective Sergeant Smith, recently returned to work after an internal investigation into another case that has led to tensions between officers at Kings Lake police headquarters. As an ex-DCI, Smith could have retired by now, and it is clear that some of his superiors wish that he would do so.

Slow Start, Very Good Story

It took me a while to get in to this story. The narrator and thus the main character sounded bored. But I stuck with it, and it turned out that the tone was perfect for the main character's slowly revealed back story. Not bored, as it turns out, just been around some interesting blocks and very circumspect. Very very worth a listen. Glad I did, and I'll get the next one._

Good Start to this Mystery Series
Reviewed: 10-03-20
A good tale that was too drawn out. About two thirds of the way through, and having gone over the same clues for the 3rd or 4th time, I was ready for the resolution. I listened through to the end, though, and it was an interesting and unexpected twist that could have been woven in more effectively earlier. Felt contrived. I'm backfilling this series after listening to #22 first. Really enjoyed that, and this is good background. Good narration.
