Where the rubber meets the road…
Reviewed: 03-03-25
Rendezvous with God by Bill Myers is a book series that will surprise you, challenge you, make you laugh and cringe and sometimes make you mad. If you have grown up in the church this series will reawaken feelings of your first love as described in Revelation 2 (the church of Ephesus). If you are honest you will have to admit that you have had many of the same questions. If you are a new believer it will point the way to a great adventure that only comes from a living daily truthful relationship with Christ. I highly recommend the adventure of reading or listening to this series. It really helps put our beliefs into our messy worlds. As J. Vernon McGee used to say “Where the rubber meets the road.”

Story
In the small town of Bacon's Corner, powerful demons are working to ensnare the souls of the townspeople. A woman has been murdered, the Christian school is under attack, and the town is divided by a legal struggle. As heavenly beings rally to aid the faithful, gigantic evil ones are on the alert, looking for any sign of weakness. Each fast-paced chapter of this novel is filled with vivid descriptions of angels and demons. And the trials of the believers are no less absorbing. Richard Ferrone's dramatic narration highlights each test of faith and truth.

A cautionary tale!
Reviewed: 12-14-23
I have reread this book several times and each time I am amazed that how perceptive Frank Peretti is in seeing a complete world, where the visible and invisible intercept. As Christians, we don’t always see a balance between these two aspects of our lives. Emphasis on prayer and action in our lives, and seeing the powerful move of God through us, affecting lives is very inspirational. These days we don’t hear much openly about the New Age movement, but it is still active and a powerful undercurrent in the world today. This great story will have a big impact in our day to day lives. It will lead us to turn to God in everything!

Story
The acclaimed biography of the early church's greatest evangelist, the Apostle Paul. Master storyteller John Pollock makes Paul and his amazing story freshly alive, so that you can know the greatest apostle much as Luke and Timothy did as they traveled with him. As you listen, you'll sense Paul's motives, his aims and priorities; what mattered to him; and what he was willing to die for.

Story
How did the world arrive at its current, disorienting state of identity politics, and how should the church respond? Historian Carl R. Trueman discusses how influences ranging from traditional institutions to technology and pornography moved modern culture toward an era of "expressive individualism." Investigating philosophies from the Romantics, Nietzsche, Marx, Wilde, Freud, and the New Left, he outlines the history of Western thought to the distinctly sexual direction of present-day identity politics and explains the modern implications of these ideas.

I agree with the author, that it is important to see the roots of our current culture. Lots to think about and I will probably listen to it one more time at least. I really appreciate the last chapter because that’s always the big question, where do we go from here?

Listening to this series a second time. At the time it was written Tyndale said, “Released in the stunning days just after 9/11, this eerily prophetic novel predicted an attack on the U.S. and the war in Iraq . . . but was written before any of it happened.”I really like the thread of the Gospel and the End Times scenario woven through each book.

Story
An unimpeachable classic work in political philosophy, intellectual and cultural history, and economics, The Road to Serfdom has inspired and infuriated politicians, scholars, and the public for half a century. Originally published in 1944 - when Eleanor Roosevelt supported the efforts of Stalin, and Albert Einstein subscribed lock, stock, and barrel to the socialist program - The Road to Serfdom was seen as heretical for its passionate warning against the dangers of state control over the means of production.

Good follow up on Thomas Sowell’s books.
Reviewed: 08-22-22
Having read Vision of the Anointed and A Conflict of Visions by Thomas Sowell this book was very enlightening! Sowell refers to it many times in his books. It is a good warning again about collectivism and Socialism as they may lead to a ruling elite. and eventually totalitarianism. He wrote at the time of the rise of Hitler and draws upon that in many of his illustrations. If you read this book listen to the intro and all of the appendix.

Story
In this book, which the author calls a "culmination of 30 years of work in the history of ideas", Sowell attempts to explain the ideological difference between liberals and conservatives as a disagreement over the moral potential inherent in nature. Those who see that potential as limited prefer to constrain governmental authority, he argues. They feel that reform is difficult and often dangerous, and put their faith in family, custom, law, and traditional institutions.

I new understanding for me
Reviewed: 07-27-22
This is the second time that I have listened to this book. Mainly because frankly, it is way over my head and even the second time I couldn’t follow everything. But what I did get was very important in helping understand the basis for differing views today. Though the author is speaking only from the point of view of economics, a subject I know almost nothing about, as a biblical Christian I can also see the basis of many views! The Bible teaches that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God”. Jeremiah the prophet said “the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked, who can know it?” This I believe is the constrained view. Of course in this view we look to God for direction. We allow God to set our boundaries and give us our vision.
