Story
If any artist could brag about his contribution to the pop culture canon, it’s Smokey Robinson. His career is filled with so many “he was there” moments it’s a wonder he doesn’t recall them with the swagger of a conquering hero: songwriting and singing as a teenager in Detroit; co-founding Motown Records with Berry Gordy; creating 26 Top 40 hits with his group The Miracles; helping to spark racial integration of popular music in the 1960s; discovering hitmakers like Diana Ross and the Supremes; penning tunes for a jaw-droppingly diverse group of artists.

Love Motown?
Reviewed: 01-13-21
I grew up with Motown hits, hearing Smokey Robinson when I was 10. Smokey Robinson is a wonderful, gracious person who is giving and caring about anyone with whom he has interacted. He is a talented musician and understands talent. He has lovely stories and has given me the impetus to go back through my Stevie Wonder collections, my Marvin Gaye collection, Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Aretha and several of the other Motown groups. Smokey has been blessed, and so am I for being able to listen to his story.

Life is so difficult just now, during the Time of Covid and many other plagues. The sweet mystery is a gentle reminder of time gone bye. I love that the protagonists are female, witty and funny. When life gets to be too overwhelming, I listen to these for some relief.

Story
Sir John Penlyon is planning to spend Christmas at his estate with his niece and his friend Danby, the closest thing he has to family since disowning his daughter years ago. (She eloped with the parson, who was, of course, penniless.) Danby suggests that at Christmastime the estate needs the presence of small children, and offers to find some - the “hirelings” - despite Sir John’s skepticism. Three children duly arrive, and the youngest, precocious four year-old Moppet, quickly endears herself to Sir John.
