As private eye Lew Archer follows the clues from the canyon sanctuaries of the megarich to jazz joints where you can get beaten up between sets, The Moving Target blends sex, greed, misdirected love, and family hatred into an explosive crime novel.

Excellent early Macdonald

I’m reading through the whole catalogue of Ross Macdonald. At first I thought his later books were the best, but this one has changed my mind. They all have their own wonderful unique terroir, their own kind of philosophy and their own place in time. This one shines for its post-war melancholy cynicism and the bold morality thrust upon Lew. It’s a gem, and it’s one of my new favorites.

Story
As a mysterious fire rages through the hills above a privileged town in Southern California, Lew Archer tracks a missing child who may be the pawn in a marital struggle or the victim of a bizarre kidnapping. What he uncovers amid the ashes is murder - and a trail of motives as combustible as gasoline. The Underground Man is a detective novel of merciless suspense and tragic depth, with an unfaltering insight into the moral ambiguities at the heart of California's version of the American dream.

My favorite of his books, red excellently by Gardener. Excellent classic hard-boiled stuff. Even better than the Blue Hammer.

Story
“Long live the King” hailed Entertainment Weekly upon publication of Stephen King’s On Writing. Part memoir, part master class by one of the bestselling authors of all time, this superb volume is a revealing and practical view of the writer’s craft, comprising the basic tools of the trade every writer must have. King’s advice is grounded in his vivid memories from childhood through his emergence as a writer, from his struggling early career to his widely reported, near-fatal accident in 1999—and how the inextricable link between writing and living spurred his recovery.

The best

I grew up on King. Always loved his work. This book is a window into his life, and his process. But most of all, it’s an invitation to write, and one that is more compelling than a thousand English classes. It’s made even better with his droll and lilting narration. Read it, you won’t be disappointed.

Story
Marlowe is assigned to tail classy, well-endowed redhead Betty Mayfield - a cinch, he thinks, until lounge lizard Larry Mitchell turns up dead outside Betty's hotel room a few hours after pawing her in a California club. Filled with Chandler's famed snappy repartee and starkly frightening scenes, Playback simmers with suspense as Marlowe tries to solve a tale of big money - and, of course, murder.

A classic, well produced

This is master-class stuff. Chandler at his most introspective - maybe cynicism had started to override the fantasy at this point. Regardless, it’s stunning stuff.
Gould is a perfect narrator.
