Story
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

The narrator was good, pleasant voice, well paced, distinct voices.

I found the book confusing, too much world-building information in places, several story lines unclear how they connected until late, was not drawn in / connected with characters and story, and an unsatisfying ending. I do not plan on continuing with book 2.

Snarky killer happy in his own skin
Reviewed: 11-13-24
I appreciated the snarky humor and matter-of-fact attitude of the assassin main character. The plot twists were also good. I just didn’t become emotionally attached to the characters.

More sex than adventure
Reviewed: 01-23-24
I could not make it through this book. Just too much masochistic and explicit sex. I was disappointed, hoping for more adventure than female sexual manipulation. Not just a little…rather it seemed to be driving the story line. So, I’m setting this book aside and moving on.

Story
Cole Riker is a Slip Runner. A contractor tasked with finding alien salvage in exchange for credits. For an ex-smuggler like Cole, there’s a catch: Don’t break the terms of parole. That means doing things by the book. Find salvage, turn it in, get paid. But everything changes when a retrieval mission lands him in a previously unknown sector. There, he finds the material he’s been sent to recover, along with something more. A brand-new form of ancient alien life.

A Light and Fun Space Adventure
Reviewed: 10-28-23
I enjoyed the story and narration. The protagonist encounters many problems as you would expect. Surprisingly, he doesn’t shirk responsibility for his troubles. He is quite the joker and despite having a reputation for being a selfish jerk, he turns out to be a good guy with a personal code of conduct. The author and narrator move the story along very quickly. There are several interesting characters with somewhat mysterious pasts, a lot of action, and a snarky spaceship AI. Fun!!!

Unfulfilled Promise
Reviewed: 08-03-20
The description of this book has promise, but I felt it was not fulfilled. The book is quite long, which I like IF I am drawn into a story, and if there is excitement with highs and lows. After 15 hours of waiting for the book to elicit some feeling in me, I finally gave up.
I guess I learned something about Thomas Cromwell, Henry VIII, Anne and Mary Boleyn, etc. A lot of story, but but very engaging.
