Story
Henry Winkler, launched into prominence as “The Fonz” in the beloved Happy Days, has transcended the role that made him who he is. Brilliant, funny, and widely regarded as the nicest man in Hollywood (though he would be the first to tell you that it’s simply not the case, he’s really just grateful to be here), Henry shares in this achingly vulnerable memoir the disheartening truth of his childhood, the difficulties of a life with severe dyslexia, the pressures of a role that takes on a life of its own, and the path forward once your wildest dream seems behind you.

Story
The nearly eight years of Harry Truman’s presidency—among the most turbulent in American history—were marked by victory in the wars against Germany and Japan; the first use of an atomic bomb and the development of far deadlier weapons; the start of the Cold War and the creation of the NATO alliance; the Marshall Plan to rebuild the wreckage of postwar Europe; the Red Scare; and the fateful decision to commit troops to fight a costly “limited war” in Korea.

Honest Assessment
Reviewed: 03-21-25
As a docent at the Truman Library in Independence most typical stories of HST would be positive and elevating (i.e. what you want to hear). This book brought a different perspective of HST...sometimes not in a positive light. At first I wasn't sure what to make of it...but as the book progressed I realized the author was utilizing many different vantage points and sources, both good and bad. I came to respect this and now I see HST in a different light...human! He certainly made his fair share of mistakes but also didn't become paralyzed to make a decision. He let the chips, or buck, fall where they may.
The reader's performance left a little to be desired...I didn't feel like he was talking to me...merely reading.

Great story! Even better narration...
Reviewed: 08-29-24
It's like your having a pint with Brian as he tells you his life trials and tribulations. Nice guy, funny stories and is an everyday dude just trying to survive...but made it big and all you can do is cheer for him. As someone that's listened to many stories of movie stars, musicians and historical figures, I enjoyed this story the most. It also made me laugh several times along the way. As I listen to audio-books in the car, each day I couldn't wait to go to work (no, really) so I can listen to more of his story. The only negative...'only' nine + hours.
Do yourself a favor, even if not a fan of AC/DC, listen to it!

This monumental book tells the enthralling story of one of the greatest accomplishments in our nation's history, the building of what was then the longest suspension bridge in the world. The Brooklyn Bridge rose out of the expansive era following the Civil War, when Americans believed all things were possible.

It's a bridge...
Reviewed: 02-22-20
While I'm a big fan of David McCullough this book was based too much in engineering versus story. It's a bridge...tell me a story not step-by-step instructions on how to build that bridge. Sure, I know your thinking 'well, what did you expect about a book with a topic of a bridge?' Fair question...I was expecting more story.
I'm still a big fan of David McCullough but unless you want to listen to large amounts of engineering jargon then you may want to skip this book.

Story
From the best-selling author and former Starbucks CEO, here is a story that is part dramatic memoir, part blueprint of the new responsibilities that leaders and citizens share in America today. The book weaves two parallel narratives to show how experiences from Howard Schultz’s troubled childhood - some of which he has never before disclosed - propelled him out of the housing projects and fueled his efforts to build a global brand and redefine the role of a company in society. Ultimately, Schultz reveals the potential we all have to transform communities and uplift lives.

Story
In this stirring audiobook, David McCullough tells the intensely human story of those who marched with General George Washington in the year of the Declaration of Independence, when the whole American cause was riding on their success, without which all hope for independence would have been dashed and the noble ideals of the Declaration would have amounted to little more than words on paper.

Story
As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were soon caught, including the notorious SS leader Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among them were Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler’s brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann.

The story was good but the performance by Bill O’Reilly sometimes left you twisting in the wind. His performance was like a newscast...his pitches were a roller coaster and he sometimes struggled with the script. I won’t listen to any more narrations by Mr. O’Reilly.
A more polished narrator would’ve allowed me to provide a higher rating.

Story
In August 1968 NASA made a bold decision: In just 16 weeks, the United States would launch humankind's first flight to the moon. Only the year before, three astronauts had burned to death in their spacecraft, and since then the Apollo program had suffered one setback after another. Meanwhile, the Russians were winning the space race, the Cold War was getting hotter by the month, and President Kennedy's promise to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade seemed sure to be broken.

Story
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.
