Story
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (German for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners. Imprisoned for more than two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism - but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.

Heartbreaking to think that humans could be so cruel to each other, but the human spirit cannot be so easily broken. Good read, well performed

Story
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Story
Mitza Maric has always been a little different from other girls. Most 20-year-olds are wives by now, not studying physics at an elite Zurich university with only male students trying to outdo her clever calculations. But Mitza is smart enough to know that, for her, math is an easier path than marriage. And then fellow student Albert Einstein takes an interest in her, and the world turns sideways. Theirs becomes a partnership of the mind and of the heart, but there might not be room for more than one genius in a marriage.

Every Professional Woman should read this book.
Reviewed: 05-13-18
If you are a professional woman, you will identify with Einstein's wife... Accomplishments of woman have been minimized by men before time. This book brings this to the forefront. Also, bad advice from other women and especially her mother (who doesn't realize the talent of her independent and smart daughter). This is a historic Fiction, so don't miss the epilogue.
If you are a professional man who works in a diverse environment, you be startled by how overt the "thief of ideas" is represented in this book.
Now you will always wonder who really did invent the Theory of Relativity??

Lenten Book Study
Reviewed: 03-26-12
I read and listened to this book as a Lenten Book study with a church group lead by our Pastor. I started my own list of 1000 Thank you's, as most in the group did. There were parts of this book that were wonderful - about her spiritual journey - but she seemed so distant from her children. At times I wondered - while you are writing about your spiritual journey, who is watching your 6 kids?? It was great listening to the author read her work as I read along & made notes in my book. In this unsettled Country, it was good to be reminded that we have so much to be thankful for. Very up-lifting!

Story
In the years around 1870, the concept of building a great bridge to span the East River between the cities of Manhattan and Brooklyn required a vision and determination comparable to that which went into the building of the pyramids. Throughout the fourteen years of the bridge's construction, the odds against its successful completion seemed staggering. Bodies were crushed and broken, lives were lost, political empires fell, and surges of public emotion constantly threatened the project.

Great Bridge was never finished - poor download!
Reviewed: 09-23-11
McCullough does a great job setting the history & background - but this book is abridged (not available in Unabridged) and you will miss a great deal of the wheeling & dealing that went on. Also, I didn't get the full down load even though I downloaded twice - so, the bridge was never finished in my version.
