Story
Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury's to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne'er-do-wells by night. Now there's a new item on the list. He needs an heir - which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar's daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she'll do.

Not as good as 'Governess Game'
Reviewed: 12-22-18
Was hoping it would be as good at the other book in the series but sadly it was not. Found the characters a bit awkward and I was not strongly attached to the secondary plot. Not a total miss but still a bit disappointing after how wonderful the other book was!

Story
From #1 New York Times-best-selling author Nora Roberts comes a novel of a woman who needs nothing, a man who sees everything, and the web of deceit, greed, and danger that brings them together - and that could tear them apart… As a professional house-sitter and freelance writer, nothing ties Lila Emerson down - not her work, not a home, and definitely not a relationship. She spends her life moving from one job to the next, sometimes crashing at a friend's Manhattan apartment.

WOW - A Proper Novel!
Reviewed: 12-18-18
Roberts has outdone herself with this one! It is not only a compelling love story but is also a suspenseful murder mystery that connects back to the days of the Russian royal family - a complex and layered story which is reflected in its length. Not a fluffy read for someone who just wants a straightforward romance, but well worth the length for the emotional attachment you acquire for the characters and their relationships. Would highly recommend!

Best in the series!

This is part of the 'Calhoun Women' series and is by FAR the best one of the lot! The male lead is surprisingly shy while the female lead is bold and loveable - a nice change from hypermasculinity and demure female damsels! The secondary story, the missing jewels from the family ancestor, adds an air of danger and mystery to the drama which was rather enjoyable.

I am a major fan of historical romances but rarely revisit the same story twice...until this wonderful book! Superb narration, feisty characters, and a lot of steamy scenes! MUST READ!

Exceeded Expectations!
Reviewed: 12-18-18
I have read many historical romances, especially those set in pre-Victorian times, and had low expectations for this romance. I was so wrong!! So wonderfully intriguing, fast-paced and human! The main characters are believable and flawed which makes their love that much more moving! Strong female lead paired with a strong male lead and a lot of humour and wit!
