Story
The body of a woman has been discovered inside the gates of MIT, draped in an unusual cloth. An examination reveals that the body is covered in a fine dust that under ultra-violet light fluoresces blood-red, emerald-green and sapphire-blue. As Kay Scarpetta pieces together the evidence, she draws herself and her team deeper into the dark world of designer drugs, drone technology and shocking corruption at the highest level.

Why do I keep hoping and wasting money ..

I keep hoping to re-capture my initial love of the stories from this author, however it does not happen. This story line is weak; continual complaints about her family; going over and over old decisions and past positions held; .... kindly have someone kill-off Kay and be done with it!
Never again will I purchase another Scarpetta saga.

Story
Homicide detective Julia Cass has witnessed plenty of crime scenes. But the murder of a Chattanooga judge is shocking in its brutality. Teamed with FBI agent Will Brannock, Julia delves into an investigation that soon unearths more bodies - all mutilated in the same way, all left with a gruesome souvenir of a killer's ruthless rage.... The only way to stop the slaughter is to predict the next victim. But when you're dealing with vengeance at its most ruthless, one wrong move can make you a target...and the next word you utter could be your last....

Excellent mix of romance and crime suspense. Her Character development is exceptional without smothering the unique crime story line. A pleasure to read on both levels. Unfortunately the narrator spoiled the listening so much I purchased the e-book part way through and changed media, but don't be put off the enjoyment was worth the expense. What a terrible loss for her family and fans. I was so looking forward to a sequel.

I enjoyed the earlier books in this series but have been disappointed by the last 2. I gave this one a chance as the author was narrating. DON'T BOTHER!
The story line is now too depressing; the police hierarchy are portrayed as idiots; his direct and previous supervisors cannot speak without yelling; the verbal abuse is nonstop and totally unrealistic - nobody works in that environment!
I have never stopped listening to a book before. My library contains over 350 books - I could not get past 15 minutes of this one.

Excellent book 1, completely spoiled by narrator

What made the experience of listening to The Next Always the most enjoyable?
Predictable but fun story line. Nora Roberts love story developed well.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Kids and female voices utterly spoiled; please Nora this narrator does not suit your fanciful, lighthearted stories.

Fantastic story; Excellent narrator

This is the first book of this type I have listened to; my biggest disapointment - the story ended. Take your time, relax and enjoy a well thought out fantasy you will relate to on one level or another.
There must be a sequel - please - soon ... and definately engage the same narrator - beautiful speaking voice and wonderful character voices.
Congratulations on an enthralling tale, melodiously told.
