After burying her spinster aunt, the orphaned Veronica is free to resume her world travels in pursuit of scientific inquiry - and the occasional romantic dalliance. Well written story and an excellent reader
Reviewed: 02-17-25
I like the way the story unfolded with little details shared throughout the storytelling. The ending was not conclusive and leaves me wanting more. The reader is fantastic at utilizing various voices. I noticed a child’s voice, a man’s voice, and the voice of the principal character.

Story
The time is World War II. The place is a brutal prison camp deep in Japanese-occupied territory. Here, within the seething mass of humanity, one man, an American corporal, seeks dominance over both captives and captors alike. His weapons are human courage, unblinking understanding of human weaknesses, and total willingness to exploit every opportunity to enlarge his power and corrupt or destroy anyone who stands in his path.

Loved this book, which gave some believable insight into the horrible circumstances of prisoners of war. The story has both suspense and intrigue. No man among the prisoners is all good or all evil. The King is a brilliant business man who treads a fine line between what is ethical and not, making him all the more interesting as a character. Peter Marlow is another interesting, imperfect, but lovable personage. The reader is wonderfully skillful acting with different voices for different characters. I was transported! Thank you.

Story
Sharp-eyed, stubborn, and passionate, Jindan was known for her beauty. When she caught the eye of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, she was elevated to royalty, becoming his youngest and last queen—and his favorite. And when her son, barely six years old, unexpectedly inherited the throne, Jindan assumed the regency. She transformed herself from pampered wife to warrior ruler, determined to protect her people and her son’s birthright from the encroaching British Empire.

This is a wonderful story, enthralling the listener from the beginning to the end. The history of Hindustan and the British influence there was not well known to me. I was very impressed with the beauty of the Punjabi culture at that time, but also appalled to learn of what went on during the imperialistic reign of Queen Victoria. The reader is also wonderful and makes the story come alive. I can not recommend this book enough!

When he left Congress in 2017, Jason Chaffetz still thought elections could save us. For generations, conservatives have hoped that freedom-loving congressional majorities could turn back the tide and restore America’s liberties and prosperity. But now, he says, winning elections will not be enough.

This was an excellent book. It highlights many examples of how the leftists select people (a B team) for unelected key positions to create control without voter approval and the impact this has on our freedom. Thankfully, he also discusses ways we can help change this over time. A more detailed book of strategies for the average American to help impact this change would be wonderful. Thank you

Story
Tired of the pace and noise of life near London and longing for a better place to raise their young children, Mary J. MacLeod and her husband, George, encountered their dream while vacationing on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides. Enthralled by its windswept beauty, they soon were the proud and startled owners of a near-derelict croft house - a farmer’s stone cottage - on “a small acre” of land. Mary assumed duties as the island’s district nurse.

This is a wonderful, realistic, tragic, and beautiful story, completely absorbing, full of unexpected turns. In the first part of the book, Sonia Velton lets the listener get to know the characters and their circumstances in an engaging way, because the story moves forward seamlessly. Halfway through the book it becomes so intriguing and suspenseful, I could have spent all day listening. I could see the characters and the story unfold in my mind. Esther Wane and Shiromi Arserio are both fantastic in their “roles”. Without their skillfulness the story would not have felt as real as it did.

Story
Carol E. Miller was 16 when the private plane piloted by her father crashed, pinning her in the wreckage, critically injuring her parents, and killing her 12-year-old sister. Compounding this traumatic event, her father told her he wished she had died instead of her sister. For the next 20 years, she labored under feelings of guilt and a lack of self-worth. When another in a long line of personal crises landed her in therapy with an EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) practitioner, she began at last to investigate the crippling effects of the plane crash.
